Saregama: A brief overview

Saregama India, (erstwhile The Gramophone Company of India), is a century old music powerhouse belonging to the RPG Group. It boasts of owning nearly 200,000 tracks, one of the largest musical archives owned by any company in the world. It has a presence at all levels of the value chain right from manufacturing to licensing software overseas and retailing of Music Cassettes (MCs) and Compact Discs (CDs).

Saregama: Interest reduction boosts net

Saregama has reported a near tripling of net profit in the third quarter of the current year vis–a–vis the corresponding quarter of last year. This has been led by the reduction in the interest costs which is due to the fact that the company repaid its debt after it made a private placement at a price of Rs 1,800 per share.

Gramophone comes clean (Analysts meet)

Gramophone Company, (renamed as Saregama India) held an analysts meet to clarify its future strategy and explain the company’s half-yearly performance. The company has grown revenues at 38%, led primarily by the 43% jump in music cassette volumes. These in turn have been led by the sales of its new release ‘‘Mohabbatein’’ apart from a 26% growth (in value terms) of catalogue sales. (Catalogue sales comprise the sales of older Hindi films and contribute almost 60% of the company’s sales.)

Gramophone: The master’s voice!

Gramophone Company has gone off track. After making a private placement at a price of Rs 1,785 in February 2000, the company merged a group company RPG Music International with itself. For the merger the valuation (done by Price Waterhouse Coopers) worked out to Rs 650 per share for Gramophone Company as against Rs 300 per share for RPG Music International.

The stock price of Gramophone Company has been through a roller coaster in the current year. After having touched a high of Rs 2316 (on March 6, 2000), the stock came off to Rs 440 in May, 2000. It currently quotes at Rs 720.

Gramophone Company has reported a 45% growth in net profit on a 16% topline growth for the full year ended March 2000. This was primarily due to improved gross profit margins, which increased from 9% last year to 11% in the current year.

HMV to play Tamil music

Gramophone Company’s Mauritius based subsidiary RPG Global Music has entered into a licensing arrangement with Pyramid International Singapore for music distribution rights. Pyramid owns inter–alia the rights to 591 Tamil films and a 109 Malayalam Films.
