Rahul Shah Learns the Key to Success as a Trader

One of my favourite Warren Buffett stories has surprisingly little to do with investing. In fact, it couldn't be farther from investing...it's about the sport of golf.

Yes, you read that right. The story about the Oracle of Omaha that is one of my biggest inspirations is set against the backdrop of a golf course.

Warren Buffett was playing golf with his friends one day, goes the story, and they all decided to bet a dollar on a particular hole. But Buffett didn't.

'Why not, Warren', they asked him. 'You're worth a gazillion.'

'I never break my discipline,' was his response.

If this doesn't tell you the extremely high standards to which Buffett subjects all his investments, I don't know what will.

The man absolutely refused to break his discipline for something as insignificant as one dollar. I certainly don't think he would ever do that for any of his investments.

And this, more than anything else, has played a starring role in his emergence as one of the greatest investors of all times.

Talking of discipline, I've lately been bumping into a gentleman at our office who has shown a similar affinity for extremely high levels of discipline.

In the umpteen meetings that we have attended together, I've never once seen Vijay Bhambwani drink tea, or coffee, or for that matter, even water from the office fountain. He carries this small water bottle with him everywhere he goes and just drinks from that.

This discipline extends to eating as well. He politely turns down every invitation for a lunch or dinner or the usual barrage of office snacks by replying that he prefers his simple 'ghar ka khana' over anything else.

Just like Buffett, it seems Vijay maintains discipline in most areas of his life, to keep indiscipline at bay from his primary vocation as well.

Vijay Bhambwani is a high frequency trader who is extremely methodical in the way he conducts his trades. He simply refuses to roll over a position into the next trading session.

Starting off as a fundamental analyst, Vijay first switched to plain vanilla charting analysis, and later made a move into neuro-behavioural technical analysis.

It is here that he seems to have found his life's calling and he has never looked back since.

Always looking to be two steps ahead of a rank and file trader by digging deep into behavioural science and leveraging on an impeccable understanding of geo-politics, Vijay has built an enviable long-term track record.

His 2018 call on rupee depreciation is a perfect case in point.

First, he observed that the impending Saudi Aramco IPO could push crude oil prices significantly higher. He also saw that there was massive FII selling and upward pressure on bond yields. These observations made him skeptical of the rupee's continued strength.

When the final and most important piece of the puzzle- the charts - also pointed towards massive rupee depreciation, he took the plunge and emerged with extremely strong returns.

It is this rare skill of marrying technical analysis with razor sharp analysis of macros and geopolitics that has made Vijay such a sought-after teacher and commentator.

Vijay is a true pioneer.

He was one of the first training mentors at the Multi Commodity Exchange between 2005-2009...

...and one of the first columnists to write a weekly column in the English language print media after the commissioning of the MCX, through columns in the DNA Money and Business Standard among other print publications.

He has done over 8,000 TV shows in the last 17 years and written over 4,000 columns and articles.

Now you can see why I'm impressed, right?

Now, Vijay will be sharing his huge reservoir of trading insights and wisdom with you, dear reader.

After over three decades of trading the markets, Vijay is now just in the mood to share his insights.

In fact, stay glued to your email today - because at 5PM today, you will receive an announcement in your Inbox that will change the way you look at investments, but also open your eyes to the way elections affect your profits.

How to Profit from Elections - coming up soon...

Warm regards,
