What is Zurich India MF buying?

Zurich India Mutual Fund is among the leading equity fund managers in the country today. Investors in their flagship equity fund – Zurich India Equity Fund would be interested in knowing what stocks the fund is buying/selling. The Portfolio Analyser helps you do just that.

We have picked Zurich India Equity Fund’s (ZIEF) portfolio for 5 months over the year 2001. Investors who would like to know the fund manager’s strategy over the last year have it right in front of them. They know his core portfolio and his favourite stocks.

(Visitors need to note that increase/decrease in the stock allocations could be due to change in valuations or due to buying/selling in the stock. The Portfolio Analyser does not try to ascertain the reason for the increase/decrease. It only serves to show investors how consistent the fund has been with its stock selection.)

A look at the historical portfolios of ZIEF reveals that the fund manager has a ‘buy and hold’ strategy. The core portfolio is easily identifiable – Ashok Leyland, BHEL, BPCL, Cipla, Dr Reddy’s, Hindustan Lever, Macmillan Swaraj Mazda, Wockhardt. Other stocks that have been in the fund’s portfolio for some time – ACC, Grasim, Satyam, TISCO.

ZIEF has been consistent in its stock pickings and has not disturbed its core portfolio too much. By holding on to its stocks it has been able to reap the benefits of long term investing. By not churning aggressively it has also kept trading costs at lower levels. These are some of the reasons for its steady performance – up 0.7% over last 12 months and up 26% (annualized) over last 3 years. The fund has also consistently outperformed its peers and the benchmark index.
