Infy spurts, HLL spoils

Jan 18, 2001

The BSE Sensex closed at 4,115 (up 32 points) and the NSE Nifty closed at 1,306 (up 8 points). The rupee was trading at Rs 46.41 to a dollar.Today, it was the buying in software and cement stocks that led to a small surge on the bourses. The bourses also saw a spurt in aluminium stocks in the closing hours. Hindalco touched circuit (up 8%) and Indal was also up 3.5%. Analysts attribute this spurt to reports of aluminium plants being shut down in the US. More such plants are expected to close down, thus closing the demand supply gap. This means aluminium prices are likely to remain firm.

Infosys (up 2.1%) and Satyam (up 4.3%) together contributed about 19 points to the BSE Sensex gains. Hindalco's gains contributed nearly 6 points to the Sensex rise.

However, HLL's 2.4% decline shaved off nearly 14 points from the Sensex.
