India's automobile industry continues to grow rapidly, supported by changing consumer preferences and rising demand for electric vehicles.

As the sector evolves, companies are constantly innovating to stay competitive.

Closely linked to economic growth and technological progress, the auto industry often serves as a key indicator of the country's overall economic health.

India is also steadily emerging as a strong player in shared mobility and electric vehicles, with the potential to take on a global role in the coming years.

Amid this positive backdrop, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles shares have come under unexpected pressure.

The stock fell nearly 3% today, drawing the attention of investors and market observers alike.

So, what triggered this sudden decline?

# US Tariff

Shares of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) declined 3%, and the reason is not routine market volatility.

The decline reflects the fresh global uncertainty after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on several European countries.

According to an Economic Times report, for Tata Motors, this is a serious issue because Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has strong exposure to the US market.

North America contributes nearly one-third of JLR's total sales, while the US alone accounts for around 22% of global volumes.

Last year, the company had demerged its passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle business into two separate listed entities.

This tariff comes at an already difficult time for JLR. The company is still dealing with the fallout from a major cyberattack that recently disrupted production.

In Q3 FY26, JLR's wholesale volumes dropped sharply to 59,200 units, marking a steep 43.3% decline compared to the same period last year.

Retail sales for the quarter stood at 79,600 units, falling 25.1% year-over-year. Volumes declined both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter, highlighting that the recovery has been slower than expected.

JLR has also acknowledged that existing incremental US tariffs on exports are already impacting volumes, even before any new duties are imposed.

These combined headwinds have weighed on sentiment, leading to a sharp decline in the shares.

What Next for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles?

Moving forward, TMPV aims to push EV growth by expanding its portfolio and making electric vehicles more mainstream.

The company's board of directors will consider the Q3 FY26 results on 5 February 2026.

According to IBEF reports, domestic companies like Tata Motors and Hero Electric are increasing their investments in electric vehicles.

With a large market, a skilled workforce, and growing renewable energy capacity, India is well placed to overcome challenges and emerge as an important player in the global EV industry.

By 2030, India could also emerge as a global manufacturing hub, exporting electric two and three-wheelers and key EV components.

Collaboration between government, industry, and startups in areas such as smart charging solutions, battery recycling, and advanced chemistry cells will drive innovation. TMPV, being a part of the EV industry, will also benefit from this.
