India's banking sector is a key driver of economic growth, contributing through capital mobilization, credit expansion, and fostering financial inclusion. In recent years, banks have displayed strong performance, supported by improvements in non-performing assets and a significant increase in credit growth. Banking stocks have experienced consistent upward momentum lately, with ICICI Bank being a notable participant in this positive trend.

ICICI Bank, one of India's largest private sector banks, offers personal banking services like savings accounts, loans, and credit cards, corporate solutions including trade finance and treasury, and operates subsidiaries in asset management, insurance, and venture capital.

However, in five trading sessions its shares fell 5%, raising questions among investors.

What caused this sudden drop?

# Profit Booking

Sometimes, a stock declines not due to any fault of the company but because investors choose to take profits. This appears to be the case with ICICI Bank at the moment.

Despite the bank posting strong Q3 FY26 results, investors likely feel that much of the positives are already reflected in the stock price. Profit booking is a common characteristic of the stock market, and it's not unusual to see a stock dip after a sharp surge. While the recent drop might seem concerning, it doesn't indicate any issues with the company itself-it's more reflective of the market taking a brief pause.

Q3 FY26 Update

ICICI Bank recently announced its quarterly numbers. Average deposits of ICICI Bank grew by 8.7% year-over-year (YoY) and 1.8% q-o-q (QoQ) in Q3 FY26.

Domestic loans grew steadily, rising 11.5% YoY and 4% QoQ.

Business banking led the growth with a strong 22.8% increase, while retail loans grew 7.2% and domestic corporate loans improved 5.6% from last year, showing healthy demand across segments.

Net NPA additions were lower than last year, even as the net NPA ratio improved to 0.37%, and the provision coverage ratio stayed strong at 75.4%. Profit after tax was Rs 113.18 bn in Q3 FY 2026.

However, profits were impacted by higher provisions during the quarter. The bank set aside Rs 25.56 bn as provisions, nearly double last year's level, which included an estimated Rs 1.45 bn linked to costs under the new Labour Codes and an additional Rs 12.83 bn of standard asset provisions following the RBI's annual supervisory review

What Next for ICICI Bank?

Moving forward, the bank plans to drive growth by making better use of its wide network and expanding its digital platforms such as InstaBIZ, Merchant STACK, Trade Online, and DigiEase, which enable end-to-end digital onboarding.

The focus remains on disciplined and well-structured lending. The emphasis is on program-based loans, diversification, adequate collateral, and strong monitoring systems.

The bank is shifting focus toward business banking and SME loans, which offer higher margins than traditional corporate lending.

Also, the Indian banking industry is growing due to strong economic growth, higher incomes, increased consumer spending, and easier access to loans. ICICI Bank, as part of the banking sector, will also benefit from this growth.

How ICICI Bank Share Price Has Performed Recently

ICICI Bank shares have fallen 5% over the last five sessions.
