The stock of Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) has drawn significant attention following its quarterly results. The company appears well-positioned to benefit from the rapid expansion currently taking place within the Indian Railways.
There is an anticipation that the forthcoming Union Budget would hike capex for the Indian Railways benefitting IRFC.
In this editorial, we will consider the future prospects for the stock of IRFC in the next three years. However, readers should note that this is not a recommendation on the stock in any form.
The main aim of IRFC is to fulfil a major share of the Indian Railways' 'Extra Budgetary Resources' (EBR) needs by securing market borrowings at the most competitive rates and terms.
Consequently, the company's core activity involves raising funds from financial markets to support the purchase or development of assets, which are subsequently leased to the Indian Railways.
These funds are primarily directed towards acquiring rolling stock assets and developing infrastructure, which together form a significant portion of the Indian Railways' annual capital expenditure.
IRFC is moving beyond just funding Indian Railways. It is now exploring lending to metro rail, renewable energy, logistics, and ports.
This strategy is designed to improve margins and reduce dependence on a single client (Ministry of Railways).
IRFC continued to maintain its zero non-performing asset (NPA) record and received fifth consecutive "Excellent" performance rating post listing from the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), reflecting strong governance, financial discipline, and execution capabilities.
For Q3 FY26, the reported NPAs were nil.
Given the government backing, the company is able to raise money at attractive rates. Recently in Q3 FY26, IRFC further strengthened its funding profile by securing a JPY 46.458 bn (US$ 300 million) external commercial borrowing facility from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, marking its first international commercial borrowing after a multi-year pause.
The company also raised funds through the issuance of Zero-Coupon (Deep Discount) bonds, enhancing flexibility in long-term resource mobilisation.
The Indian Government's focus on the National Rail Plan and the development of Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) ensures a massive requirement for long-term funding, which IRFC is can provide.
Interest Rate Volatility: As a finance company, IRFC's margins are sensitive to borrowing costs. If global or domestic interest rates remain high, it could squeeze spreads.
OFS (Offer for Sale) Risk: The government still holds a large stake (over 86%). To meet SEBI's public shareholding norms (25%), the government may sell more shares in the future, which can create short-term downward pressure on the price.
Policy & Budgetary Risk: IRFC's core business is tied to funding Indian Railways' infrastructure. Any reduction in railway capital spending, changes in budget allocations, or shifts in infrastructure policy could directly dampen revenue and growth prospects.
Diversification Challenges: While IRFC is exploring non-railway projects (like metro and logistics), such moves bring new, unfamiliar risks and could dilute focus from its core business without guaranteeing similar returns.
Let's now take a look at the financial numbers of IRFC.
| Rs m | FY23 | FY24 | FY25 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net Interest Income | 62,742 | 65,472 | 66,571 |
| NII Growth | 0.8 | 4.4 | 1.7 |
| Net Interest Margin (%) | 26.4 | 24.6 | 24.5 |
For Q3, FY26, total income stood at Rs 67,192.3 m, which was a small drop YoY. A marginal year-on-year moderation in quarterly income was largely on account of a one-year extension of a moratorium granted by the Ministry of Railways for a project lease agreement, impacting revenue recognition during the period.
For Q3 FY26, IRFC reported a net profit of Rs 18,021 m, registering a year-on-year growth of 10.52% and marking the highest-ever quarterly net profit in the company's history.
IRFC's Assets Under Management (AUM) rose to a record Rs 4,750 bn as of December 2025; the highest in the company's history; despite the absence of fresh business from Indian Railways during the period.
The growth was driven by diversification initiatives under IRFC2.0, undertaken in line with a whole-of-government approach.
Importantly, the company has already achieved its annual sanction guidance of Rs 600 bn within nine months itself, which underlines the robustness of its pipeline and the speed of execution.
The initiation of new funding opportunities in areas such as ports, rail logistics, and metro projects is anticipated to support IRFC's robust performance. While the company may find scope to enhance its margins, there is also the potential risk of encountering non-performing assets (NPAs), an issue it has not faced previously.
During the first nine months of FY26, the company successfully met its full-year sanction target and delivered impressive results in Q3 FY26. Overall, the outlook for IRFC remains positive; however, the government's potential Offer for Sale (OFS) might create downward pressure on the company's stock performance.
Investors should evaluate the company's fundamentals, corporate governance, and valuations of the stock as key factors when conducting due diligence before making investment decisions.
