Infrastructure development is a step-by-step process that fuels economic growth. Roads, bridges, and buildings don't just shape cities - these create jobs, boost industries like steel and cement, and improve overall quality of life.
A strong construction sector is essential for a nation's progress, ensuring long-term stability and development.
One of the major players in this industry is NCC (Nagarjuna Construction Company). The company is involved in large-scale projects, including roads, irrigation, power, and housing.
With a solid presence in both government and private contracts, NCC has significantly contributed to India's infrastructure growth.
NCC share price has come under investor spotlight as its share price has come under pressure after declaring quarterly results.
It is down 7.4% in the last five days.
What went wrong?
Let's take a detailed look at the company's quarterly financials to understand why NCC's share price is falling.
NCC's performance in Q3 FY25 was disappointing, with its standalone profit after tax declining by 13% year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 1.9 billion (bn).
This drop was mainly due to slow project execution, which was impacted by state elections and heavy rainfall. These factors led to extended billing cycles, delaying revenue recognition and affecting overall profitability.
Revenue from operations also saw a decline of 1.6% YoY, amounting to Rs 46.7 bn. The slowdown in execution was particularly evident in key markets such as Maharashtra and Jharkhand, which together account for nearly 46% of NCC's total order book.
Delays in project approvals and execution hurdles in these states contributed significantly to the revenue dip.
Profitability took a further hit as earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) fell by 14.6% YoY to Rs 4.1 bn. As a result, EBITDA margins contracted to 8.8%.
This decline was driven by lower project execution efficiency and extended billing cycles, which increased costs and weighed down overall margins.
The weak Q3 results have forced NCC's management to lower its full-year revenue guidance. The company had earlier projected 15% revenue growth for FY25 but has now revised it down to just 5%.
Margin expectations were also adjusted downward from the earlier range of 9.5-10% to 9.2%. This revision reflects ongoing execution challenges and delays in awarding new projects, which are expected to continue affecting performance in the near term.
Despite securing hefty orders in Q3 FY25 the company does not expect a major recovery in execution until FY26. Industry experts believe that sluggish order flow and continued project delays will likely keep revenue growth under pressure for the coming quarters.
The combination of weak quarterly performance and a muted growth outlook has spooked investors, leading to a sharp decline in NCC share price.
The stock hit an 11-month low as concerns over lower revenue and margin expectations weighed on sentiment. Investors remain cautious, given the uncertainty around project execution timelines and the company's near-term financial performance.
NCC aims to navigate the current challenges by focusing on execution recovery and selective order acquisition. Management expects project execution to improve from Q1 FY26 as election-related disruptions subside and billing cycles normalise.
The company is maintaining a strong order book, which stood at Rs 518.3 bn as of Q3 FY25, providing visibility for the next few years. It secured new orders worth Rs 134.5 bn in the current financial year, with Rs 84.4 bn added in Q3 alone.
Despite this, concerns remain over execution delays, particularly in key states like Maharashtra and Jharkhand, which account for a large portion of its backlog.
Margin pressure is expected to persist. The company is taking measures to control costs and improve operational efficiency to offset some of the impact. It's also focusing on high-margin projects and better working capital management to stabilise profitability.
Debt levels remain a concern, with total debt at Rs 15.7 bn, though the management is working on reducing it through better cash flow management. Despite near-term headwinds, the long-term outlook remains positive, with the government's continued push for infrastructure development.
NCC is also exploring opportunities in newer segments to drive future growth. It has identified high-growth areas such as metro rail, water supply, and renewable energy projects as key focus areas.
Expansion into these sectors is expected to contribute to revenue diversification and reduce dependence on traditional infrastructure projects.
Investors should evaluate the company's fundamentals, corporate governance, and valuations of the stock as key factors when conducting due diligence before making investment decisions.
In the past five days, NCC share price has tumbled 7.4%. In the last month, it has slipped 16.9%.
In the last six months, its share price has nosedived 35.3%. In the last one year, its share price is down 1.9%.
The stock touched its 52-week high of Rs 364.5 on 31 July 2024 and a 52-week low of Rs 200.9 on 14 March 2024.
