Hughes ties up with Teles for marketing

Feb 15, 2000

Hughes Software (HSS) has tied up with the $ 200 m Teles AG of Germany for its software switches used in the area of intelligent networking. The tie up is expected to generate revenues of more than $ 5 m (Rs 220 m). HSS, a group company of General Motors is a dominant player in the fast growing communications software sector. The company dedicates around 11% of its revenues to new product development. Most of these products evolve from services that HSS offers and are in its chosen domain of communications software.

In intelligent networking, HSS has added features such as televoting, prepaid calling to its intelligent peripherals (which incorporate network intelligence otherwise in switches). These are marketed as service nodes.

Teles will help HSS in marketing its products in the European Union (EU). It is Europe, which by adopting the digital standard in telecommunications has moved ahead of the USA as far as technology assimilation is concerned. It is quite possible that HSS required a European face apart from Teles’ distribution to make a dent in the EU.

Market View:
With global trends in the communications industry moving towards convergence, a need for higher bandwidth and a migration to open systems, HSS is well positioned to capitalise on the forthcoming booming in telecom software. Most analysts have rated HSS as a buy.
