    China, India dominate world steel

China, India dominate world steel After crude oil, steel is perhaps the most important commodity in the world. The demand for both the commodities also maps quite closely to overall economic activity, captured in terms of GDP growth rate. They also share another characteristic. Much of the new demand for these commodities springs out of the two emerging Asian giants - China and India.

    The year gone by
If there were any doubts on this issue, the year 2009 settled it conclusively. At a time when global steel consumption fell by 8% Year on Year (YoY), demand from China and India hit record levels. Chinese demand grew by 25% YoY, while demand from India grew by 14% YoY. The underlying demand in the Asian giants comes from infrastructure spending as they make rapid strides towards prosperity. It is also bolstered by government stimulus packages. There is also consumer demand coming from auto, consumer durables and construction. It was not the case with the rest of the world. The economic crisis took a heavy toll on steel demand as industrial production declined sharply YoY. With funding drying up, steel demand from the construction sector plummeted.

    What to expect?
The world economy is on its way to recovery in 2010. As a result, the demand for steel is likely to rebound. Due to the low base effect, the growth rate in YoY terms will be higher in those regions which experienced the sharpest declines in 2009. There are already signs of capacity utilizations improving in US and Europe over their 2QFY10 lows. Overall, global consumption is expected to surpass the previous peak levels. China and India will continue to be the most important markets with consumption expected to reach 600 m tonnes (mt) and 63 mt respectively.

There are several greenfield and brownfield steel projects lined up in India. Unfortunately many of them are stuck in issues over land acquisition and state government permits. Given the strong demand and availability of raw materials, it is high time India capitalized on the opportunity.
