Cement prices firm up in the north

Feb 25, 2000

After reports that cement prices in the Eastern and Western markets had firmed up considerably, news has come in that prices in the northern markets have firmed up by over Rs 10 per 50-kg bag. Cement prices had earlier hit a five-year low in the northern markets. The cement sector has witnessed a rise in demand over the last one year mainly due to the pick up in domestic housing activity. However, the surge in prices that accompanied the rise in demand had not sustained mainly due to a slow pick up in infrastructure spending by the government and investment spending by the industrial sector. As a consequence, all but the western markets suffered declines in realisations.

In recent weeks however, cement prices have registered a sharp rise across the country. This is mainly due to a rise in cement demand (there are some signs of a pick up investment activity) even as growth in output is slowing down. Cement demand is expected to grow at over 12% over annum over the next two years.
