India's banking sector is expanding at a rapid pace. Strong economic growth, rising disposable incomes, and increasing credit demand are driving this expansion.
With digital banking adoption rising and private sector banks outperforming public sector peers, the sector is set to grow further.
Among the leading banks in India, ICICI Bank has consistently delivered strong financial performance. It has expanded its retail and corporate loan books while maintaining asset quality. The bank has also leveraged technology to enhance customer experience and improve operational efficiency.
ICICI Bank share price is under investor focus as its share price is on an upward journey. In the past month, the stock has gained 4.3%, reflecting investor confidence.
Despite broader market fluctuations, ICICI Bank's strong fundamentals have helped sustain this rally. Let's take a look at the key factors driving its share price higher.
ICICI Bank's domestic loan portfolio grew by 15.1% year-on-year (YoY) and 3.2% sequentially as of 31 December 2024, demonstrating strong credit demand across segments. This growth was primarily fueled by its retail, business banking, and corporate lending divisions.
The retail loan portfolio, which remains a key driver of the bank's growth, expanded by 10.5% YoY, reflecting healthy demand for home loans, vehicle financing, and personal loans.
Within the retail segment, the credit card portfolio grew by 17.9% YoY, underscoring the bank's strong position in consumer finance.
Meanwhile, the business banking portfolio saw an impressive 31.9% YoY growth, highlighting increasing demand from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that benefit from ICICI Bank's streamlined digital lending solutions.
On the corporate lending side, the domestic corporate loan book grew by 13.2% YoY, reflecting improved investment activity by businesses amid a stable economic environment.
ICICI Bank has successfully maintained superior asset quality, setting itself apart from industry peers. The net NPA (Non-Performing Assets) ratio stood at 0.4% as of 31 December 2024, reflecting the bank's strong risk assessment and recovery mechanisms.
The gross NPAs stood at Rs 60.8 billion (bn) in Q3FY25, while recoveries and upgrades totaled Rs 33.9 bn, ensuring that stressed assets do not significantly impact profitability. The bank also wrote off Rs 20.1 bn in NPAs during the quarter.
Furthermore, the provision coverage ratio (PCR) stood at 78.2%, meaning ICICI Bank has set aside substantial reserves to cover potential loan losses.
The total fund-based outstanding to all borrowers under resolution declined to Rs 21.1 bn or 0.2% of total advances, a decrease from Rs 25.5 bn in the previous quarter.
ICICI Bank's financial strength is further highlighted by its capital adequacy and profitability ratios.
As of 31 December 2024, the Common Equity Tier-1 (CET-1) ratio stood at 15.%, and the total capital adequacy ratio (CAR) was 16.6%. These figures indicate that the bank is well-capitalised, allowing it to continue its growth trajectory while adhering to regulatory requirements.
Profitability also remains strong. On a consolidated level, profit after tax grew 16.6% YoY to Rs 128.8 bn, driven by strong core operating income and lower provisioning costs. The return on equity (RoE) for Q3FY25 stood at 17.6%.
The net interest income (NII) increased 9.1% YoY to Rs 203.7 bn and core operating profit grew 13.1% YoY to Rs 165.2 bn, excluding subsidiary dividend income. Fee income, an essential component of non-interest revenue, saw 16.3% YoY growth, reaching Rs 61.8 bn.
ICICI Bank is focused on sustaining its growth momentum through a mix of digital transformation, portfolio diversification, and capital efficiency. The bank is actively expanding its retail and corporate banking segments while ensuring robust risk management.
One of its key priorities is technology-driven banking. The bank has introduced DigiEase, a digital platform aimed at simplifying the onboarding process for business banking customers.
It also continues to enhance iLens, its retail lending platform, which now includes retail credit cards, mortgages, personal loans, and education loans.
ICICI Bank is making ongoing investments in computing infrastructure and digital channels to improve efficiency and customer experience.
Business banking continues to be a strong contributor to growth. The bank has maintained a steady expansion in mid-market corporate lending, benefiting from the formalisation of businesses.
