Investing in penny stocks can be a high-risk, high-reward opportunity.

One key metric that investors often consider is book value. It represents the asset value of a company after liabilities are subtracted.

A high book value relative to the stock price can indicate that a company is undervalued.

In the Indian stock market, many penny stocks stand out for their solid asset bases, strategic expansions, and improving financial performance.

In today's article, we'll be looking at five high book value penny stocks.

#1 Modi Rubber Ltd. (MRL)

Modi Rubber Ltd. (MRL) has been a key player in the Indian tyre industry since 1971.

The company's latest per share book value stands at Rs 279. At the current price of Rs 98, this translates into a price to book value of 0.35.

It's focus was on automobile tyres and tubes under its MARATHAN brand. The company has diversified into resin-coated sand production, real estate, and travel services.

With a widespread distribution network consisting of 62 depots, 20 C&F agents, and over 3,000 dealers, the company has maintained a strong market presence both in India and abroad, like the US, Middle East, etc.

Its 1.7 million (m) unit capacity across multiple plants gives it a strong manufacturing base.

Despite its legacy, Modi Rubber has faced financial headwinds in recent years.

The company's standalone performance in the December 2024 quarter, showed a net loss of Rs 32 million (m). This was in contrast to the Rs 135 m profit reported in the previous quarter.

Some investments in associate companies such as Vinuara Beverages and Uniglobe Travel (South Asia) Private Limited, have seen significant net worth erosion. This has weighed on the company's financials.

Additionally, its joint venture Modi Marco Aldany Private Limited had suffered setbacks due to covid, leading to cash losses and store closures.

However, the company's long term performance paints a brighter picture. Its shift towards real estate and travel services has started to pay off, with these segments contributing significantly to revenue.

The company's diverse income streams, including rent (21%), interest (22%), and sale of traded goods (18%), have provided stability, and reduced reliance on its traditional tyre business.

Promoter shareholding is 62.69% and there are no pledged shares.

Looking ahead, Modi Rubber's ability to streamline operations, optimise costs, and strengthen its core businesses will determine its growth trajectory.

In the past 1 year, shares have gained 18%.
