Hughes Software Systems (HSS) is one of the very few software companies in India that has entered into the technology arena. As more and more is expected from the Internet, companies like Hughes will have a greater role in the evolution that technology has to go through to meet these demands. Hughes for quite sometime has been focusing on convergence. One of it’s main focus has been next generation networks that can carry VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).
Meeting the growing demand for convergence of communications technology, HSS' software stacks and frameworks provide a complete set of building blocks for network and signaling. Buying Hughes products helps customers by reducing development time freeing them from having to develop complex in-house communications software and they can focus on value-added applications.
Hughes recently tied up with Sun Microsystems, Inc. and AudioCodes, the world's leading Voice over Packet (VoP) board manufacturer, to integrate HSS' VoP protocols with Audiocodes VoP Boards to work on the SUNä CP 1500 chassisä.
The software that Hughes makes implements the transmission of voice over the Internet through packets (till now most of the traffic on the Internet is data slowly the demand for voice traffic is burgeoning). These are implemented according to certain standards and norms, which are, know as protocols. The hardware (communications boards) for VoP is provided by AudioCodes. This hardware will be used in the networking equipment provided by Sun Microsystems. The VoIP Communication Boards are ideal, cost-effective building blocks for implementing media gateway functionality in VoIP Gateways, VoATM gateways, carrier grade platforms and IP enabled Call Centers.

HSS, AudioCodes, and Sun have already successfully tested the interoperability of the Hughes Softswitch product with the AudioCodes MP-100 Analog Media Gateway family. There are plans to continue to test the entire suite of HSS VoP stacks for compatibility. By implementing Hughes’s products AudioCodes will have the advantage of minimized development time for its products. Also, adherence to new telephony standards helps assure ease of integration.
Sun that provides hardware and software for the telco (telecommunications) and networking industry, has always been pressed by demands of interoperability from telcos and network integrators. By integrating its solutions with Hughes and inter-operating platforms from Audiocodes; Sun will bring significant benefits to its customers in terms of reducing time to revenue for the customers.
Recently, Hughes also tied up with Motorola to sell its network and signaling software stacks & frameworks for Motorola’s integrated communications processors. This integration will help Motorola by reducing development time for its next generation networking equipment, by freeing it from having to develop complex in-house communications software.
Hughes Software Systems' communication protocol stacks & frameworks that are market tested and are based on the latest standards like MGCP (media gateway control protocol), GRPS (general packet radio service) and UTMS (universal mobile telecommunications system) will further the integration level of Motorola's Packet Telephony solutions.
No doubt both the deals are an achievement for Hughes but what is more is significant is the fact that Hughes products in the area of convergence are gaining acceptance at a global level. And when products succeed, that too in such technology intensive areas they are signs of achieving a very high level of maturity. No doubt that Hughes will benefit, but the ramifications are far greater. The Indian software industry as a whole stands to benefit from Hughes success, as it portrays the image of an Industry that has come of age. A industry that has the capability and maturity not only to develop customised solutions but the foresight and the wisdom to deliver products that are general in nature.
