Over the last few weeks, FMCG stocks have been gaining attention. In the past, FMCG was known as one of the best defensive spaces, along with IT, during market volatility.

The Nifty FMCG index has rallied sharply since the start of April 2026. The Index which was at 46,135 points on 1 April 2026 has now closed at 51,140 points on 23 April, jumping almost 11%. This is significantly better than the NSE Nifty's performance.

Before we delve into the stock of FMCG major Hindustan Unilever, let's give you some reasons why FMCG stocks are grabbing attention.

#1 Strong Quarterly Results

Some companies from the space have reported strong quarterly results. An example is Nestle India, which reported a sharp 26% increase in net profits for the quarter ending March 2026.

Marico, on the other hand, said Q4 FY26 consolidated revenue grew 20%+, indicating strong momentum, driven by domestic and international business.

Given these positive results from key players, investors are now expecting strong numbers from most companies in the sector. This has, in turn, lifted sentiments for FMCG stocks.

#2 Defence Shift from IT Sector

One possible reason for momentum in FMCG stocks is that the other defensive space, IT, is seeing a slowdown. Most companies like HCL Tech and Infosys have lowered guidance for 2026-27.

There is now a possible shift from IT to FMCG. There is no indication of a slowdown as yet in the FMCG space.
