Indian Railways network is considered to be the backbone of the economy.
Whether it's public transportation or freight movement, the Indian Railways network is indispensable for both.
The Government of India has been continuously striving to expand this railway network further, with a mission to connect the remotest parts of the country via railways.
It is evident from the capex allocated for railways in the Union Budget 2026-27. The government allocated a gross budgetary support of around Rs 2,930 billion (bn) for railways, which is the highest of all times.
As announced by the government, seven new high-speed railway corridors would be developed across India, spanning over 4,000 km. This project is anticipated to attract around Rs 16,000 bn of investments.
Then a new dedicated freight corridor will be built between Dankuni in the east and Surat in the west, strengthening East-West trade.
Another important project that was announced during the budget was a 40 km underground rail corridor to connect the north east with the rest of the country.
Apart from these new projects, there are many ongoing railway projects, such as PM GatiShakti for developing three major Economic Railway Corridors across the country.
Indian Railways is not just expanding its network but enhancing the safety of the passengers with projects like Kavach, which is an automatic train protection system, already commissioned across multiple stretches of different railway corridors.
