Small-cap stocks are making headlines again, but not for the reasons they were in March. Back then, Sebi's comments triggered a sell-off. Now, the narrative has flipped.

Smallcap indices are on a tear, hitting record highs seemingly every other day.

This comes after two months of underperformance compared to the broader market.

In April, the smallcap index surged a staggering 11.4%, leaving the benchmark Nifty in the dust (up only 1.2%).

Even though the Nifty itself is at record highs, the smallcap rally is a different beast altogether.

All three indices hit new peaks on 30 April 2024. However, there's a twist.

While the overall segment is booming, some individual small-cap stocks are diving, hitting 52-week lows.

So why are these 5 smallcap bucking the trend?

#1 TCI Express

First on the list is TCI Express.

The company offers distribution services through various modes of transport.

TCI Express caters to a diversified customer base, which includes companies from several industries, such as automotive, pharmaceutical, textiles, engineering, and telecom.

It has built a hub and spoke infrastructure with 900+ owned centres across India, encompassing more than 40,000 pick-up and 50,000 delivery points. This helps the company cover over 95% of the pin codes in India.

Through this model, it offers surface, domestic and international air, and e-commerce express services to its customers.

Shares of the company hit their 52-week low of Rs 997 on 14 March 2024. Currently, the shares are trading just 8% above their all-time lows. This decline is attributed to subdued financial results.

TCI Express Share Price Performance - 1 Year

In the March 2024 quarter, TCI Express reported a 2.9% year-on-year (YoY) decline in total income to Rs 3.2 billion (bn). Meanwhile, profits fell by 17.8% to Rs 315.9 million (m), which was due to a 7% increase in selling, general, and administrative expenses.

Additionally, there has been a reduction in foreign institutional investors' (FII) stake in the company, now standing at 2.4% compared to 2.9% in the December 2023 quarter.

Looking ahead, TCI Express is prioritising investment in technology and automation to streamline operations and enhance customer service.

The company is also actively expanding its branch network to broaden its reach and improve accessibility for customers.

#2 Goodyear India

Second on the list is Goodyear.

The company is engaged in the business of manufacturing and trading tyres and tubes. Its products are mainly used in the automotive industry and serve major automotive companies, including Escorts and Mahindra Tractor.

Shares of the company hit their 52-week low of Rs 1,100 on 28 March 2024. The company's shares are just trading 9.8% away from their 52-week low.

Goodyear India Share Price Performance - 1 Year

This decline is mainly attributed to a recent spike in the prices of key commodities like rubber and crude oil in March 2024, which are essential raw materials for tyre production, affecting investor sentiment negatively.

Additionally, the company reported weak Q3 results in the farm segment, with the tractor industry experiencing substantial de-growth. As a leading player in farm tyres, Goodyear India's annual volumes also declined, impacting both revenue and profitability.

With the expectation of further increases in raw material prices, the company's Q4 performance might be adversely affected, contributing to the downward pressure on the stock.

Looking ahead, Goodyear India is focusing on developing and launching new, contemporary products aimed at the growing luxury and SUV segments in the Indian passenger car market.

The company's goal is to capture a larger share of the passenger vehicle tyre market while maintaining its leadership position in the farm segment.

#3 Transpek Industries

Third on the list is Transpek Industry.

Transpek Industry is a chemical company in India. The company, a part of Excel's group of companies, manufactures and exports a range of chemicals.

It caters to a diverse range of industries, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and advanced polymers.

The company's niche is in making products using chlorinated chemistry. Over the years, it has developed an edge in making acid and alkyl chlorides and is now one of the largest players in the field. Transpek's products even find applications in electric vehicles (EV) and defence applications.

Shares of the company hit their 52-week low of Rs 1,615 on 20 November 2023. The company's shares are just trading 8.9% away from their 52-week low.

Transpek Industries Share Price Performance - 1 Year

This decline can be attributed to back-to-back reductions in FII stake over the last two quarters. The FII stake now stands at 0.1%, down from 1.9% in the September 2023 quarter.

Quarter Ending 23-Sep 23-Dec 24-Mar
Stake (%) 1.9 0.9 0.1

Additionally, in the December 2023 quarter, the company reported a 24.5% YoY decline in revenue to Rs 1.5 bn, while net profit also declined by 43.1% to Rs 140.8 m. This further exacerbated the situation, dragging the stock down.

Going forward, the company is embarking on an expansion of its global presence, forming partnerships with new clients in South America, Eurasia, and Japan.

The company is currently working on the pipeline of new products in chlorine and non-chlorine chemistry. It sees a strong opportunity in multi-synthesis products.

Transpek has undertaken a capex of Rs 300 m to replace an old plant to accommodate new products for which the demand is expected to be higher. Along with the focus on new products, there is good visibility in growth.

#4 Satia Industries

Fourth on the list is Satia Industries.

Satia Industries is one of the leading wood and agro-based paper manufacturers in India, with a fully integrated manufacturing setup. The company supplies paper directly to various state boards, accounting for over 40% of the business. It enjoys a 10-12% market share in the state orders.

Shares of the company hit their 52-week low of Rs 104 on 13 March 2024. The company's shares are just trading 10% away from their 52-week low.

Transpek Industries Share Price Performance - 1 Year

This can be attributed to the FII stake reduction in the company, now standing at 2.1% compared to 2.9% in the December 2023 quarter.

Additionally, the company reported poor Q3 results, adding to the selling pressure.

In the December 2023 quarter, Satia Industries reported an 11.5% YoY reduction in revenue, amounting to Rs 4.3 bn. Net profit also declined by 38.8% YoY to Rs 396.4 m. The net profit margin fell to 9.2%, primarily due to reduced demand.

Looking ahead, Satia Industries plans to modernise its existing plants and machinery to improve efficiency and production quality.

The company is also considering setting up a new paper machine within its existing premises, which could potentially double its production capacity.

For more details, see the Satia Industries company fact sheet and quarterly results.

#5 Rajratan Global Wire

Last on the list is Rajratan Global Wire.

The company manufactures bead wire and steel wire that are used in automobile, aircraft, and earth-moving equipment tyres.

The company has operations in India and Thailand. In India, it has a market share of 50% in the tyre bead wire segment. In Thailand, its subsidiary, Rajratan Thailand, is the only manufacturer of bead wire.

It serves customers across India, Thailand, the US, South Korea, and Italy. Some of its marquee clients are Apollo Tyres, Bridgestone, Ceat, MRF, Michelin, and Toyo Tyres.

Shares of the company hit their 52-week low of Rs 579 on 28 March 2024. The company's shares are just trading 2.4% away from their 52-week low.

Transpek Industries Share Price Performance - 1 Year

This can be attributed to the weak FY24 results.

For FY24, the company reported flat revenue growth at Rs 8.9 bn. Net profit came in at Rs 718.3 m, down 28.5% YoY.

The profit margin stood at 8%, a decline of 11% compared to the previous year. This decline was primarily driven by lower earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) margins in Thailand, due to rising input costs, particularly wire rods, and lower sales realisation per tonne.

Furthermore, mutual funds have reduced their holdings to 7.6%, down from 8.3% in the December 2023 quarter.

Looking ahead, the company targets a production of 125,000 tonnes by the end of FY25. Additionally, the Chennai facility will soon begin production, contributing a minimum of 14,000 tonnes.

For more details, see the Rajratan Global Wire company fact sheet and quarterly results.

Should You Invest in Stocks Trading At 52-Week Lows?

Investing in stocks trading at their 52-week lows can be a tempting proposition for many investors as they assume that such stocks may rebound and offer good returns.

However, it's important to note that just because a stock is trading at its 52-week low doesn't necessarily mean it's a good buy.

While stocks trading at their 52-week lows may seem undervalued, there could be other factors at play, such as poor management, declining revenues, or unfavorable regulatory changes.

Therefore, investors need to exercise caution and avoid making hasty investment decisions based solely on a stock's current price level.

When considering investing in stocks trading at their 52-week lows, it's important to conduct thorough research and analysis of the company's financials, including its cash flows, earnings, debt levels, and future growth prospects.

It's also essential to analyse the industry trends and economic conditions that may affect the company's performance.
