The Iran war is hitting India's economy, not through missiles or boots on the ground, but through something far more everyday: the price of filling up your tank.
In just one week, India raised petrol and diesel prices twice. Global crude oil prices have been climbing steadily as tensions in the Middle East escalate and fears grow over potential disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest hike followed an earlier Rs 3-per-litre increase, making it the steepest rise in retail fuel prices in nearly four years.
The ripple effects don't stop at the pump. When fuel gets expensive, freight costs go up. When freight costs go up, everything from groceries to appliances gets pricier. Household budgets tighten. The squeeze is real.
And it's quietly pushing urban Indian families toward a decision they'd been putting off: Maybe it's finally time to go electric.
This is nudging urban Indian households towards owning at least one electric vehicle (EV).
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited (TMPV) is India's premier homegrown automotive manufacturer and a key part of the Tata Group.
Following a strategic restructuring, it now operates as a standalone entity housing both the domestic passenger vehicle business, including ICE and EV segments, along with the luxury automobile brand Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles is the third largest car manufacturer in the growing Indian Passenger Vehicle (PV) sector.
The company has also maintained leadership in the electric vehicle segment, holding around 40.2% market share in FY26.
The EV business remained a key growth driver during the year. Annual EV sales increased 43.3% YoY to 92.2K units in FY26 compared to 64.3K units in FY25.
In Q4 FY26 alone, EV volumes surged 69.2% YoY to 26.9K units, reflecting rising adoption of electric mobility across India.
Going forward, the company plans aggressive expansion through its subsidiary, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM).
These initiatives are aimed at accelerating mainstream EV adoption and strengthening TMPV's leadership position.

Conclusion
India's electric vehicle (EV) story is clearly gaining momentum. As per the India Brand Equity Foundation, the sector is witnessing strong growth driven by government incentives, rising environmental awareness, improving charging infrastructure, and technological advancements.
Policy initiatives such as the FAME scheme and the government's Make in India push are further accelerating domestic EV manufacturing across the value chain.
Looking ahead, India has set ambitious targets for 2030, aiming for EVs to account for 30% of private cars, 70% of commercial vehicles, 40% of buses, and 80% of two and three-wheelers. This could translate into nearly 80 m EVs on Indian roads over the coming years.
Against this backdrop, companies with aggressive EV expansion plans, rising manufacturing capacities, strong localisation strategies, and investments across batteries, charging infrastructure, and new product development could remain key stocks to watch.
Happy investing.
