Sterlite Industries, after having received a No Objection certificate from the Pollution Board is all set to achieve 100% capacity utilisation for its copper smelter in Tamil Nadu. If full production is achieved at the 100,000 tpa smelter, the plant could rake ina turnover of Rs 11-12 bn in the whole year. The unit is expected to end the current fiscal ended June 1999 with a production of 65,000 tonnes, which roughly translates into a turnover of about 7.5 bn.
Mr. Deb Bandyopadhyay, president, (operations), Sterlite said that, 'The targeted turnover would include about 2 bn from the 350 tonnes output per day from the phosphoric acid plant that went on stream last week'. The acid plant would reduce the country's import requirement of the commodity by about 5% and save foreign exchange worth Rs 1.2 bn. India imported an estimated 1.2 m tonnes of phosphoric acid last year while domestic production was only 0.43 m.
