Equity mutual funds continued to draw investors in May 2021 even as India faces one of the biggest health crisis.
In the month of May, the mutual fund industry witnessed highest net inflows since March 2020, as a decline in covid cases combined with vaccination drive and prospects of an economic recovery improved investor sentiment.
Better than expected earnings also boosted optimism.
Investors pumped in Rs 100.8 bn into equity and equity-oriented schemes during May 2021.
This marks the third consecutive month of net inflows for open-ended equity schemes.
After eight consecutive months of outflows, equity mutual funds saw net inflows of Rs 91.2 bn in March 2021 and Rs 34.4 bn in April 2021.
The contribution of monthly systematic investment plan (SIP) increased marginally to Rs 88.2 bn in May from Rs 85.9 bn in April 2021.

Indian mutual funds trimmed their positions in Tata Motors DVR, Borosil Renewables, Kalyan Jewellers, Heranba Industries, DFM Foods, Sanghvi Movers, Kolte Patil, and Kirloskar Industries in May.
Among these stocks, Tata Motors DVR witnessed the maximum selling of Rs 1.3 bn.
Apart from the above, the other most sold stocks by mutual funds in May included Skipper, Zuari Global, Gravita India, Fermenta Biotech, Rico Auto Industries, GPT Infraprojects, and HPL Electric.
On the other hand, the top bought small cap stocks in May were Shree Renuka Sugars, Parag Milk Foods, Shakti Pumps, TCNS Clothing, Magma Fincorp, Avanti Feeds, and Lux Industries.
Apart from the above, the other most bought stocks by mutual funds in May included TV18 Broadcast, Solara Active Pharma, Butterfly Gandhimathi Appliances, EID Parry, and Poly Medicure.
The small cap fund category witnessed Rs 10.8 bn worth inflows in May as compared to Rs 1.8 bn in April 2021.

With Indian stock markets scaling fresh record highs, retail investors continued to opt for mutual fund investments in May.
The equity funds reported a record monthly addition of 10.98 lakh portfolios in May. It was three times the two-year monthly average of 3.81 lakh additions.
