Energy – Who’s the fairest of them all?
With the Government claiming to privatise the oil & gas sector, these stocks threaten to become the market’s fancy. However, with the North Block unsure about the strategic importance of this sector, taking a position is speculating on the Government’s decision.
The large intra-day movements these stocks witnessed last Thursday, when the Cabinet Committee on Disinvestments met to chalk out a disinvestment’s blueprint, vindicate this theory. The movement was largely due to the building up and the subsequent unwinding off speculative positions during the day.
However, do these stocks offer an upside and what are the possible future scenarios?
Is it a bargain?
|3 year avg. P/E
- No disinvestments or deregulation: These stocks have traded at a three-year average multiple of 12 plus. One can counter argue that such valuations were on the back of privatisation & deregulation. But if we consider that the economy will grow by 7% then these companies should grow by 8% to 10% and the market should reconsider the valuation of these stocks.
- Disinvestment and Deregulation: These two are to be taken together, for if the Government is to successfully undertake strategic disinvestment, then the bidders will ask for a deregulation commitment. In such a scenario the stocks should see an even better valuation.
The low valuations are due to the uncertainty in the sector regarding the Governments future course of action. Once there is clarity on the Government’s intention, one way or the other, we can expect these stocks to be rerated.
