The Indian stock markets rose sharply on Friday, with the Sensex and Nifty gaining up to 1%, even as global markets declined. Strong first-quarter earnings, robust buying in IT stocks, and positive investor sentiment helped lift the markets.
At the time of writing, the BSE Sensex was trading 803 points higher at 77,984. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty was 207 points higher at 24,280.
While overall market sentiment remained positive, one stock that stood out as a notable loser was BSE.
The company's share price fell by 3% today, drawing the attention of market watchers. What caused this sudden drop?
Shares of BSE fell more than 3% on Tuesday, and the reason behind the weakness is sectoral weakness.
The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 50 indices were both trading around 0.7% lower during the session. Since BSE is part of these indices, the stocks also came under selling pressure.
Another reason could be profit booking. BSE shares had gained around 36.5% year-to-date (YTD) and after yesterday's weak market sentiment, some investors may have chosen to lock in profit.
Overall, the decline appears to be driven by sector-wide weakness and profit-taking rather than company-specific factors.
Moving forward, BSE plans to enhance its e-platform offerings, including book-building for IPOs, Offer to Buy, Offer for Sell, and the New Bond platform.
Also, the company aims to distribute trading volumes more evenly throughout the week and promote monthly contracts, particularly for the bank index.
The management is focused on bringing more participants into the market and increasing liquidity.
A key part of this strategy is deeper engagement with foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and large institutions, especially in monthly and longer-duration derivative contracts, where volumes can scale sustainably over time.
BSE shares have declined 6% in the past five trading sessions.
Over the past year, the shares have been up 45%.
The stock touched its 52-week high of Rs 4,446.80 on 27 May 2026 and its 52-week low of Rs 2,021.50 on 26 September 2025.
