Bonuses are one of those little joys in life that never get old-whether it's an unexpected day off, an extra scoop of ice cream, or a well-earned reward at work.
In the stock market, a bonus issue brings that same warm feeling. It's a company's way of acknowledging its shareholders, sharing the rewards of growth.
It's more than just about the extra shares-it's often seen as a signal of a company's confidence in its growth and a gesture of goodwill toward loyal shareholders.
In recent months, many companies have delighted their shareholders with unexpected bonus announcements-adding a touch of excitement to the markets.
Here's all you need to know about the latest one...
If approved, this will be the fourth time the company rewards its shareholders with a bonus issue.
The company's history of issuing bonus shares dates back to 2002, when it announced its maiden bonus in the generous ratio of 1:1.
This was followed by a 2:5 bonus issue in 2010, indicating consistent value creation. In August 2018, the company once again rewarded shareholders with a bonus issue in the ratio of 1:10.
| Year | Bonus Ratio |
|---|---|
| 2002 | 01:01 |
| 2010 | 02:05 |
| Aug-18 | 01:10 |
| Jul-25 | 01:05 |
While the idea of free shares is appealing, a bonus issue does not change the overall value of your investment. The number of shares increases, but the share price is adjusted accordingly.
In many cases, bonus issues produce short-term enthusiasm until that fades away.
Therefore, while this step adds to the track record of the Karur Vyas Bank, investors should see it as a sign of confidence, not an assurance of returns.
Along with the bonus issue, Karur Vysya Bank also released its results for the first quarter of the financial year 2026.
For the June 2025 quarter, the company reported a 5% jump in the net interest income to Rs 10.8 bn. While the net profit for the quarter came in at Rs 5.2 bn.
The lender's asset quality also improved, with net NPA falling more than 42% year-on-year to Rs 1.7 bn and the net NPA ratio reducing to 0.2%.
| (Rs m, Consolidated) | FY22 | FY23 | FY24 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net Interest Income (NII) | 27,154 | 33,488 | 38,092 |
| NII Growth (%) | 15.1 | 23.3 | 13.7 |
| Net Profit | 6,733 | 11,061 | 16,048 |
| Net Profit Margin (%) | 12 | 17 | 19.6 |
| Return on Equity (%) | 8.9 | 12.9 | 16 |
Its net profit grew at the CAGR of 64.7%. The company maintained good financial health, with an average RoE of 12.6%.
Karur Vysya Bank is setting its sights on growth that goes beyond the industry average. The bank expects its credit growth this year to be at least 2% higher than the sector's overall pace.
To fuel this, it plans to add 28 new branches in the first half of the financial year, with a strong focus on expanding its presence across Southern and Western India.
Sharing the bank's outlook, MD & CEO Ramesh Babu noted how the banking world-both in India and globally-is changing rapidly.
From digital innovation to shifting customer expectations and new business models, the landscape is evolving fast. Karur Vysya Bank is preparing to meet this change head-on by strengthening its network and tapping into emerging opportunities.
