The paint industry is currently experiencing a downturn characterised by subdued demand, intense competition, and margin pressure.
Paint demand in urban areas is slow as consumers defer non-essential purchases like repainting or home maintenance.
The impact is telling on India's largest paint company, Asian Paints.
Let's dive straight into the Q1 FY26 results of the company.
The company reported Q1 FY26 consolidated net sales at Rs 89.38 billion (bn), down 0.2% over the corresponding period of last year.
The net profit of Rs 11.17 bn, was down 6% YoY from Rs 11.86 bn in Q1 FY25.

According to the management, the Q1 demand was impacted by early monsoons.
In terms of segments, revenues for the coatings business in India were 0.2% lower than last year.
The domestic decorative paints business did relatively better, registering a volume growth of 3.9% but posting a revenue decline of 1.2%.
The revenues from the industrial coatings business grew 8.8%, on the back of good performance in auto & protective coating segments.
The operating margin for the quarter dropped to 18.2% from 18.9% YoY due to higher marketing investments.
On the international front, revenue growth was 11.1% on a like-to-like basis and 20.4% in constant currency terms.
Asian Paints declared subdued numbers for Q1 FY26. However, the management has expressed optimism. They have said there are early signs of green shoots in urban demand. Also, the rural demand has stabilised.
The company is rapidly expanding its distribution footprint. Currently, Asian Paints caters to over 1.7 lakh retail touchpoints.
To maintain and enhance market share, the company plans to be a differentiator in terms of service. It's driving its Beautiful Homes Painting Service & Trusted Contractor Service with a strong net promoter score focus.
The company is also pushing the innovation quotient through new products, which contributed 14% of overall revenues in Q1 FY26.
Asian Paints' backward integration projects (VAM-VAE & White Cement) are also on track. This would improve cost efficiency and enhance capability to bring out differentiated products.
While the company's initiatives are good, competition has become intense. Birla Opus has rapidly gained market share within 16 months, posing a serious competitive threat.
There are reports that JSW Paints has made a significant foray into the Indian paints industry by signing definitive agreements to acquire a 74.76% controlling stake in Akzo Nobel India. The company is maker of the well-known Dulux brand of paints.
Rising input costs and fierce competition are some of the challenges that Asian Paints will have to withstand to hold market share.
Over the last one month, the share price of Asian Paints has gained 3% from levels of Rs 2,341 to the current levels of Rs 2,409. In the past one year, shares of the company have lost about 20%.
The stock hit a 52-week high of Rs 3,394 on 16 September, 2024. The stock also hit a 52-week low of Rs 2,125 on 4 March 2025.
