Tuesday's opening bell brought a rare and puzzling moment for Indian markets - the Nifty50 and BSE Sensex, which almost always move together, suddenly went their separate ways.

In morning, the Nifty 50 had slipped 159.25 points (down 0.64%) to 24,615.00, while the Sensex was actually up 166.15 points (0.21%) at 78,805.18.

Naturally, investors were left scratching their heads over what was going on.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) stepped in to clear the air, explaining that this wasn't a glitch or market anomaly, it was the result of the newly introduced Closing Auction Session (CAS) mechanism.

The exchange noted that this divergence followed an equally unusual gap between spot and futures prices for the Nifty and Bank Nifty in the previous session on 3 August, suggesting the two events were connected rather than coincidental.

Amid this, the share price of Steel Authority of India (SAIL) jumped 4.4% intraday to Rs 172.42.

Here's why.

#1 Higher Trading Volume

SAIL witnessed a sharp surge in trading activity on Tuesday, with 985.9 million (m) shares changing hands on the NSE, translating into a traded value of Rs 1.68 billion (bn). The stock emerged as one of the day's volume toppers, indicating strong investor participation.

The rally was likely supported by positive momentum across the broader metal sector. During the session, the Nifty Metal Index advanced 0.4%, while the BSE Metal Index gained 0.75%, reflecting renewed buying interest in metal stocks.

As one of India's leading steel producers and a key constituent of the metal indices, SAIL benefited from the sector-wide optimism.
