According to press reports, Himachal Futuristic Company Limited (HFCL) is likely to bag an order from Botswana Telecommunications for wireless in the local loop equipment. The order, floated via a global tender, is valued at Rs 340 mn.
The global tender had generated bids from large multinationals including Mitsui, Siemens and Lucent. HFCL's bid is the lowest amongst all the bidders.
The Indian telecom industry has witnessed a massive amount of investment in the past few years. With the ongoing reforms it is likely that such investment will further increase, given the largely untapped potential of the Indian market. These investments have also generated the interest of a large number of telecom equipment manufacturers, both domestic and Indian, to set up bases and increase capacity in India. As a result, the telecom equipment market has become more competitive than it ever was.
If HFCL were to win the bid, it would be getting access to foreign markets. This is a must, given the level of competition in the domestic markets, as it will lead to a larger target market for the company. If HFCL successfully implements what it bid for it would give it a level of credibility in the international markets, which could later help it win more such orders. Given the cost advantage that the company has vis a vis international competitors, this could be but one step in the quests of HFCL to tap global markets.
