The share price of Tata Motors is back in the news again.
The recent announcement by the Prime Minister about the meeting of a Group of Ministers on rate rationalisation, has boosted sentiment in the auto sector.
Dalal Street is hoping that the outcome of the meeting next week would be a broad based reduction in GST, which in turn could give a boost to domestic consumption.
Such a move would be positive for auto stocks, including Tata Motors.
The stock is also in the news for its proposed demerger, the record date - i.e. the date when it will take effect - has been set to 1 October.
The commercial vehicle (CV) business, along with related investments, will move into a new entity called TML Commercial Vehicles Limited, to be renamed Tata Motors Limited and listed separately.
The passenger vehicle (PV) business, which includes Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), is to remain with the existing company.
With so much going on, investor interest has increased recently in the stock.
Over the last one year, the stock has been a disappointment... but can it bounce back?
In this editorial, we will consider the pros and cons of investing in the stock of Tata Motors.
As part of the Tata Group, one of India's oldest and largest conglomerates established in 1868 by Jamsetji Tata, Tata Motors began its journey in 1945 as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Co. Ltd., marking the group's entry into the automotive sector.
Today, Tata Motors is a market leader in commercial vehicles and holds a strong position among the top three in the passenger vehicle segment.
As India's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, accounting for nearly 80% of the market, Tata Motors leads the country's EV revolution.
The company plans to invest between Rs 160 bn and Rs 180 bn by FY30 largely to grow its EV business. It aims to expand its portfolio by launching six additional models by March 2026.
To drive the "mainstreaming" of EVs in India, Tata Motors has outlined a comprehensive strategy. This includes diversifying its EV product portfolio to offer vehicles with better range and achieving price parity with internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.
The company also plans to expand its e-car dealership network to 50 cities and to increase the number of public charge points to 100,000 by FY30.
Tata Motors is betting big on a strong rebound in the EV segment as its volume fell 13% YoY in FY25.
It recently launched the EV version of the Harrier and plans to launch the Sierra, along with upgrades to its existing EV lineup, to boost demand.
These models will help the company strengthen its position in various price segments, including entering the premium EV segment. It has set an ambitious target of increasing its market share in the passenger vehicles segment to 18-20% by FY30 from 13.2% in FY25.
For JLR, the company has planned to invest €18 bn over five years, which will be funded entirely from internal sources.
Tata Motors is also focusing expanding its commercial vehicle business, targeting a 40% share by FY27.
The near-term challenges for the company include global economic uncertainties, supply chain issues, and the transition to EVs.
However, Tata Motors' ongoing product launches, cost optimisation, and market expansion plans position it well for long-term growth.
The recently signed India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aims to double bilateral trade by 2030 and significantly reduce tariffs on goods and services between the two countries.
The FTA drastically reduces tariffs on automotive imports between India and the UK from over 100% to 10% under quotas.
This makes luxury British vehicles like Jaguar and Range Rover (JLR) manufactured by Tata Motors more affordable in India, potentially boosting JLR sales and market share.
The company's share price has been under pressure recently due to the negative outlook and revised guidance from its UK-based luxury subsidiary, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
The subsidiary has cut its EBIT margin guidance for FY26 to 5-7%, down from an earlier estimate of 10%. This weaker financial forecast has raised concerns about profitability.
The management is targeting a return to 10% EBIT margins and improved cash flow by FY27 or FY28.
JLR is projecting close to zero free cash flow (FCF) for fiscal year 2026 due to the weaker financial outlook. The company had generated a robust €1.5 (FCF) bn last year. JLR contributes around 71% of Tata Motors' revenues and 80% of its profitability.
Thus, the market believes the recent weakness in the reported financials will continue in FY26.
For the quarter ended June 2025, Tata Motors' net sales declined 2.5% YoY to Rs 1,044 bn against Rs 1,071 bn in the same quarter last year.
The net profit fell 30.7% YoY to Rs 38.71 bn during the period, compared to a profit of Rs 55.87 bn in the same quarter last year.
For FY25, revenue of the company grew 1.3% YoY to Rs 4,397 bn but reported a 28.3% YoY decrease in net profit to Rs 232.78 bn compared to a net profit of Rs 324.53 bn in FY24.
The management has highlighted challenges such as US import tariffs, supply chain disruptions, semiconductor shortages, and macroeconomic uncertainties.
The premium passenger vehicle segment in China, the world's largest auto market, is facing intense price competition. The Chinese market has also seen widespread discounting.
To mitigate the tariff risk, JLR is engaging with the government. The recently signed UK-US trade deal would reduce tariffs from 27.5% to 10%.
JLR is also reallocating available units to accessible markets to optimise delivery.
As far as the Indian market is concerned, Tata Motors plans to regain a 50% market share in India's EV passenger vehicle market over the next 18-24 months.
The recent announcement on GST reduction has already lifted sentiment around the stock to an extent. But these serious challenges need to be overcome for the stock market to become bullish on the Tata Motors again.
