Today, 20 August, the Indian stock markets were trading slightly higher at the time of writing. The BSE Sensex gained 105 points at 81,746, while the NSE Nifty 50 was up 26 points at 25,006.

The Nifty IT index was slightly up by 0.05%, while the Bank Nifty lost 0.30%. Midcap and smallcap indices traded flat with marginal gains.

One stock that has been rising over the last few days is the stock of Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL).

Here are reasons for the same.

2 Reasons Why HAL Share Price is Rising

#1 97 LCA Tejas Mark 1A fighter Order

The Indian government has approved the acquisition of 97 LCA Tejas Mark 1A fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) at a cost of approximately Rs 620 billion (bn). This is the second major order for the Mark 1A variant, the first being for 83 aircraft valued at Rs 480 bn a few years ago. With this latest approval, the total number of LCA Mark 1A jets ordered by the IAF rises to 180.

Production of these aircraft will be undertaken by Hindustan Aeronautics, which is expected to receive substantial business opportunities from this deal, including future contracts for over 200 LCA Mark 2 aircraft and advanced medium combat aircraft.

The LCA Mark 1A variant features superior avionics, radar systems, and has over 65% indigenous content, supporting the 'Make in India' initiative.

This order for the LCA Tejas Mark 1A fighter aircrafts led to buying in the stock of HAL.

#2 Defence Production

The government recently announced that India's defence production reached a new record high of Rs 1,506 bn in the financial year 2024-25, marking an 18% increase over the previous year's Rs 1,270 bn. The record achievement highlights India's growing and strengthening defence industrial base.

Investors remained optimistic on the prospects of defence stocks like HAL, which tends to benefit directly from increased spending in defence.

What Next?

HAL recently reported numbers for Q1 FY26 which were mixed. Revenue increased by 10.8% to Rs 48.19 bn compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

The net profit for Q1 FY26 declined 4% from last year to Rs 13.77 bn.

The company's order book remains robust at over Rs 1,890 bn, which supports strong revenue visibility for coming years.

Strategic projects such as the Tejas Mk1A aircraft and helicopter fleet are key drivers of HAL's performance.

HAL has ramped up production capacity with new manufacturing units and partnerships with private firms, targeting higher production of aircraft by 2026.

It's also investing annually in research and development to upgrade its product portfolio and sustain order inflows.

The company has reiterated its focus on expanding manufacturing capabilities and securing new contracts aligned with national defence goals.

The company's growth outlook is strongly underpinned by a growing order book, strategic contracts, enhanced production capabilities, new product developments, and expanding export markets.
