Small-cap stocks, often overlooked by mainstream investors, can offer hidden gems with the potential for explosive growth.
This appeal has made small-cap stocks a popular choice for investors seeking higher returns than those typically offered by large-cap stocks.
These smaller firms often have greater growth potential, which can lead to substantial gains over the long term. For instance, the BSE Smallcap index has outperformed the BSE Sensex in 2024, posting a 28.6% gain compared to the Sensex's 11.7% rise.
However, it's important to recognise that not all small-cap stocks will outperform. As in any market, the quality of the company is a key factor in determining its potential for success.
Investing in small-cap stocks requires thorough research, careful analysis, and a deep understanding of a company's fundamentals. Finding a high-quality small-cap stock trading at an attractive valuation can be particularly challenging.
In this article, we will explore five high-quality small-cap stocks that are currently trading at low valuations.
First on the list is Easy Trip Planners.
Easy Trip Planners is India's second-largest online travel tech platform that offers travel-related products and services through its flagship brand, 'Ease My Trip'.
The company provides end-to-end travel solutions such as airline tickets, train tickets, bus tickets, hotels, holiday packages, and other value-added services.
Ease My Trip recently ventured into charter solutions through its subsidiary Nutana Aviation Capital.
The company also has a presence in the insurance sector through its subsidiary, EaseMyTrip Insurance Broker Private Ltd.
Easy Trip Planners has the largest agent network across India, with over 60,000 agents across B2E (business-to-employee), B2C (business-to-consumer), and B2B2C (business-to-business-to-consumer) distribution channels.
Easy Trip Planners has acquired multiple businesses in the hospitality and travel sectors in the last five years to expand its service offerings. Even after such acquisitions, the company is debt-free.
Despite all this, the stock price of Easy Trip Planners are currently trading near its 52-week low.
The stock is priced at Rs 39.4, just 6% above its 52-week low of Rs 37. In terms of valuation, the company is trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 35.1x, which is below its median P/E of 61x.
This can be attributed to subdued FY24 earning performance.
For FY24 its revenue from operations grew by 31.5% YoY to Rs 5.9 billion (bn). Meanwhile, the profit for the year declined by 23% YoY to Rs 1 bn as the March 2024 quarter slipped into a loss.
The company attributed the latest quarter's loss to write-offs of amounts that were supposed to be recovered from now-defunct Go Airlines (India) Limited, which operated Go First carrier.
The holding company, Easy Trip Planners Ltd, has determined that the chances of recovering the money are very low due to the ongoing dispute resolution proceedings for the airline at the National Company Law Tribunal in Delhi.
Going forward, Easy Trip Planners is investing in technology to enhance its platform, improve customer experience, and introduce innovative features.

The company distribute wines under a bouquet of popular brands, including RASA, Dindori, The Source, Satori, Madera & Dia, with its flagship brand Sula being the category creator of wine in India.
The company's operations are divided into two categories: wine production and the import of wine and spirits.
Sula's strategy relies heavily on premiumisation. In terms of volume and value, premium products now account for 65-70% of the company's portfolio, up from 50% previously. The company is the market leader with close to 60% market share in the premium wine category.
Currently, the company produces 56 different labels of wine at four owned and two leased production facilities located in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Financially, Sula maintains a strong balance sheet with a low debt-to-equity ratio of 0.1.
Despite this, the stock is trading at Rs 484, just 8.2% above its 52-week low of Rs 447. The stock is trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 44x, below its 10-year average P/E of 45.1x.
This valuation pressure can be attributed to weak Q4 results. For the March 2024 quarter, the company reported a 10% year-on-year (YoY) increase in revenue, reaching Rs 1.3 bn, up from Rs 1.2 bn a year earlier.
However, net profit declined by 4% YoY to Rs 135.5 million (m).
Additionally, consecutive reductions in promoter stakes have contributed to the stock's performance.
The promoters have decreased their holding from 26.3% in the December 2023 quarter to 26.2% in the March 2024 quarter and further reduced it to 25.5% in the June 2024 quarter.
Looking ahead, the company is looking to increase its market share, boost its earnings, and expand its presence in the industry.

Next on the list is CSB Bank.
CSB Bank, formerly known as Catholic Syrian Bank, is a prominent private sector bank in India with a history dating back to 1920.
CSB Bank provides traditional banking services including savings and current accounts, fixed deposits, personal loans, home loans, and auto loans. It also offers digital banking services, such as internet and mobile banking, to enhance customer convenience.
In recent years, CSB Bank has focused on strengthening its financial position and expanding its footprint.
CSB Bank shares are trading at Rs 323, just 3.9% away from their 52-week low of Rs 311.
Additionally, the bank is trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 10.3x, below its 10-year average P/E of 11.1x.
This can be attributed to the RBI penalty.
CSB Bank Limited was fined Rs 18.6 m for violations, including paying commissions to employees for non-performing assets' recovery, failure to inform the Indian Banks Association (IBA) about terminated service providers, and improper payment structures for business correspondents.
These infractions were identified during the bank's supervisory evaluation as of 31 March 2022.
Additionally, Canadian billionaire Prem Watsa's Fairfax Group in July 2024 divested a 9.7% stake in CSB Bank through its arm FIH Mauritius Investments.
The open market transaction took place at an average price of Rs 352.75 per piece, taking the transaction size to Rs 5.9 bn.
FIH Mauritius Investments offloaded over 16.8 million shares of CSB Bank through a block deal on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). FIH Mauritius Investments is also the promoter of Thrissur-based CSB Bank.
Going forward, the company plans to expand its operations in India.

Next on the list is M K Proteins.
The company is engaged in manufacturing vegetable refined oils. It refines rice bran, sunflower, cotton seed, soya bean, palm, and more.
Also, the company has a location advantage as its manufacturing facilities are in Gujarat. Since Gujarat is one of the largest producers of groundnut in India, it helps the company procure groundnut from farmers and wholesalers in the surrounding locality.
The company has consistently reported strong financial performance in the past 4 years. Also, M K Proteins has a low debt-to-equity ratio of 0.1.
However, the stock is currently trading at Rs 10.2, just Rs 0.8 away from its 52-week low of Rs 9.5. The stock is trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 34.3x, which is well below its 5-year average P/E of 92.8x.
This underperformance can be attributed to several factors, including a weak sales growth of 9.39% over the past five years.
Additionally, the company reported a 24.8% decline in revenue for the June 2024 quarter, while net profit remained unchanged at Rs 24.8 m.
The company's exposure to fluctuations in agri-based raw material prices has also contributed to the stock's decline.
Looking ahead, the company plans to increase its market penetration in India by targeting new customer segments and regions.
For more details, see the M K Proteins company fact sheet and quarterly results.
Last on the list is TCI Express.
The company offers distribution services through various modes of transport.
TCI Express caters to a diversified customer base, which includes companies from several industries, such as automotive, pharmaceutical, textiles, engineering, and telecom.
It has built a hub and spoke infrastructure with 900+ owned centres across India, encompassing more than 40,000 pick-up and 50,000 delivery points. This helps the company cover over 95% of the pin codes in India.
Through this model, it offers surface, domestic and international air, and e-commerce express services to its customers.
TCI Express' stock price is currently trading at Rs 1,082, just 8.5% away from its 52-week low of Rs 997. The stock is trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 33.9x, which is below its 10-year average P/E of 41.4x.
This was on the back of consecutive poor earnings.
For the June 2024 quarter, the company reported a 3.9% decline in topline Rs 3 bn. Meanwhile, the net profit declined 31% to Rs 323 m.
In the March 2024 quarter, TCI Express reported a 2.9% YoY decline in total income to Rs 3.2 bn. Meanwhile, profits fell by 17.8% to Rs 315.9 m, which was due to a 7% increase in selling, general, and administrative expenses.
Additionally, there has been a reduction in foreign institutional investors' (FII) stake in the company, now standing at 1.6% in the June 2024 quarter compared to 2.9% in the December 2023 quarter.
Looking ahead, TCI Express is prioritising investment in technology and automation to streamline operations and enhance customer service.
The company is also actively expanding its branch network to broaden its reach and improve accessibility for customers.

Investing in high-quality small-cap stocks with low valuations can be an appealing strategy due to the potential for significant growth.
Small-cap stocks often represent companies in their early growth stages, offering substantial upside potential as they expand market share.
When these stocks are priced below their intrinsic value, they provide a margin of safety, which can lead to substantial appreciation once the market recognises their true worth.
Additionally, small-cap stocks are often overlooked by institutional investors, leading to pricing inefficiencies that create opportunities for savvy investors to find undervalued gems.
However, this strategy also comes with risks. Small-cap stocks tend to be more volatile than large-cap stocks, with prices that can fluctuate widely. They may also face liquidity issues, making it harder to buy or sell shares without significantly impacting the stock price.
Hence, while the rewards can be substantial, it is crucial to carry out thorough research and careful analysis before investing in small-cap stocks.
Identifying companies with strong fundamentals and growth prospects is key, and investors should be prepared for higher volatility and consider diversifying their portfolios to manage risk effectively.
