The Indian stock markets are trading lower today. At the time of writing, the BSE Sensex is down 0.5% to about 80,353 points, marking its lowest level in two weeks. The NSE Nifty is also down 0.48% or 120 points.

Traders were concerned about the economic impact of new US tariffs on Indian goods. Most sectors traded in the red, with major losses in technology, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.

The one stock that is rising in a falling market is Jaiprakash Power Ventures.

Here are some reasons for sharp gains.

2 Reasons Why Jaiprakash Power Ventures Share Price is Rising

#1 Exploring Options for Solar PV Plant

The Board of Directors have considered a proposal to explore the options for setting up of Solar PV Plant of 50 MW capacity at the company's thermal power project site at Bina, Madhya Pradesh.

This is subject to such approvals as may be required including that of lenders. The estimated investment would be of Rs 3 billion (bn).

Following the announcement, the stock hit the 5% upper circuit.

#2 Good Prospects

The prospects for solar power PV plants in India are very strong.

The government and private sector both are actively investing in solar power, supported by policies like subsidies, tax incentives, and streamlined project commissioning timelines.

Investors are optimistic on the sector, which is another reason for the stock to gain ground.

What Next?

Jaiprakash Power Ventures reported subdued quarterly numbers. The revenues for Q1 FY26 dipped to Rs 15,832 m from Rs 17,547 m in Q1 FY25.

The net profits too fell with the Q1 FY 26 net profits at Rs 2,781 m down from Rs 3,485 YoY.

Moving forward, electricity demand is projected to continue growing at around 6-6.5% annually over the next five years, with peak demand expected to reach 277 GW by FY26. This rising demand should benefit Jaiprakash Power Ventures going ahead.

The proposed solar plant at the 500 MW Jaypee Bina Thermal Power Plant site marks a significant step towards expanding into renewable energy alongside its established thermal and hydroelectric power operations.

The move reflects the company's strategic intent to tap into the growing renewable energy market in India, diversify its energy mix, and align with the country's push for cleaner energy sources.

Despite a recent short-term dip in profits, the company's long-term prospects appear optimistic, bolstered by this solar initiative which could enhance its growth trajectory and sustainability profile.
