Today, 12 September, the Indian markets are performing positively. The BSE Sensex is up by about 0.27%, trading around 81,773 points.

The Nifty 50 index has also gained about 0.47%, trading around 25,124 points. Most sectors are trading in the green, led by metals and technology stocks.

Adani Power shares are in the limelight.

Let's tell you about some reasons for the same.

2 Reasons Why Adani Power Share Price is Rising

#1 Company Awarded Fresh Order

Adani Power has been awarded a total of 1,600 MW capacity by MP Power Management Company under the recently concluded tendering process.

The company has received a letter of award from MP Power Management, awarding 800 MW additional capacity under 'Greenshoe Option'. This comes on the back of Adani Power's earlier success in winning an initial 800 MW capacity in the same bidding process.

This is the fifth major power supply order received by the company in the last 12 months, taking the total awarded capacity to 7,200 MW.

This additional capacity of 800 MW awarded is at the same tariff of Rs 5.838/kWh applicable to the earlier awarded 800 MW capacity.

#2 Company to Set-Up New Plant

Adani Power will supply power from the new 1,600 MW (800 MW X 2) ultra-supercritical thermal power unit, to be set up under the design, build, finance, own, and operate (DBFOO) model, in Madhya Pradesh.

Both the units will be commissioned within 60 months of the appointed date. The company will invest around Rs 210 bn towards setting up the plant and related infrastructure.

Both these developments led to the stock rising higher today.

What Next?

Adani Power has been successful in bagging orders in the last 12-months. Last year in September, the company, along with Adani Green Energy, was awarded a composite 6,600 MW (5,000 MW solar and 1,600 MW thermal) power supply order in Maharashtra.

Earlier in May this year, Adani Power received a contract from Uttar Pradesh government for supply of 1,600 MW power from a greenfield plant in the state.

In August 2025, the company received a letter of award from the Bihar government for supply of 2,400 MW of power.

Last month, it received the letter of award from MP for 800 MW, and the awarded capacity has now increased to 1,600 MW following the exercise of greenshoe option.

Adani Power is implementing India's largest private sector capex programme. It has an operating capacity is 18.15 GW currently from 12 thermal power plants and is aiming to achieve a generation capacity of 41.87 GW by 2031-32.

However, the company does face challenges. Some of its installed power capacity operates without long-term power purchase agreements, exposing the company to volatile merchant tariffs and power demand risk.

The performance for Q1 FY26 was subdued. Revenue was Rs 141,092 m, down 5.7% YoY, from Rs 149,556 m in Q1 FY25. Net profit was Rs 33,051 m, down 15.5% YoY.

Overall, Adani Power's prospects are underpinned by large-scale capacity expansion, technological upgrades, and demand growth in India's power sector. While financial leverage and market uncertainties pose risks.
