Top 5 Stocks Mutual Funds Bought and Sold in August 2023
- Overall equity mutual fund inflows at Rs 202.5 billion (bn) in August 2023, were the highest in five months.
- Smallcap funds received the second-highest inflows in August.
- Mutual fund portfolios hit an all-time high of 154.2 million (m) in August (151.4 m in July).
- SIP inflows were at an all-time high of Rs 158.1 bn in August.
This reflects the growing bullishness towards the Indian mutual fund industry and growing awareness.
In August 2023, inflows into equity mutual funds surged 167% to Rs 202.5 bn as smallcap and midcap funds saw heavy demand.
Systematic investment plans (SIPs) continued their good run. The official AMFI data showed that the contribution via SIPs hit a fresh all-time high of Rs 158.1 bn in August.
Following the trend that's been going on for some months, largecap funds continued to see outflows.
Meanwhile, smallcap funds drew the highest net inflows in August.
Inflows into gold ETFs surged to the highest level since April 2022.

Top Stocks Sold by Mutual Funds in August 2023
Largecaps: Indian mutual funds trimmed their positions in largecap stocks such as Dr Reddy's Labs, Trent, and Tata Consumer Products.
Pidilite and Indian Oil Corporation were the other largecaps that saw selling.
Midcaps: From the midcap space, mutual funds offloaded Supreme Industries, HDFC AMC, and Astral.
Smallcaps: Campus Activewear, Anupam Rasayan, SIS, and Mahanagar Gas saw maximum selling by MFs from the smallcap space in August 2023.
Top Stocks Bought by Mutual Funds in August 2023
Largecaps: Coming to buying, Adani Power, Zomato, and IRCTC witnessed massive inflows.
Tata Power and Interglobe Aviation (IndiGo) also witnessed buying.
Midcaps: From the midcap space, mutual funds bought shares of Union Bank of India, Star Health, ACC, and Nykaa.
Other notable midcaps that saw heavy buying include Dixon Technologies and Coforge.
Smallcaps: Suzlon Energy, SJS Enterprises and Inox Wind were the top smallcap buys.
Reportedly, mutual funds bought 647.1 m shares of Suzlon Energy worth Rs 15.9 bn in August 2023.
Other smallcaps that witnessed buying include Premier Explosives and Godrej Industries.
