The Indian stock markets closed lower on 22 September 2025.

The Nifty50 closed at 25,057, down 112 points. The BSE Sensex closed down 386 points, at 81,715.

Top laggards were Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors, and HDFC Bank. The market weakness is due to concerns over US trade policies towards India as well as the recent H-1B visa regulations.

One stock that rallied in a falling market was Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).

Here are reasons for the same...

2 Reasons Why GRSE Share Price is Rising

#1 Infrastructure Status to Large Ships

There are reports that the Indian government recently granted infrastructure status to large ships - commercial Indian-owned and flagged ships of 10,000 gross tonnage and above, as well as Indian-built ships of 1,500 gross tonnage or more.

This status makes it easier for shipbuilders and shipping companies to raise capital and attract investment, boosting sector confidence and stock prices.

Most companies from the sector saw their stocks rallying following these reports.

#2 GRSE Signs 5 MoUs

The company has signed MoUs with partners in the shipbuilding, port, and Infrastructure sectors including Deendayal Port Authority, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority, Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation, The Shipping Corporation of India and Modest Infrastructure Private Limited.

These MoUs create a structured framework for GRSE and its partners to explore and jointly develop projects across multiple domains, newbuild construction (including green/low emission vessels), ship repair, construction of green tugs as per GTTP specifications, development and maintenance of port infrastructure, jetty and berth development, multimodal logistics etc.

What Next?

Currently, GRSE is working on 15 warships across four different classes for the Indian Navy.

Of these, Androth, the 2nd ASWSWC being built by GRSE and Ikshak, the 3rd Survey Vessel have successfully completed its contractor sea trials and are being readied for delivery. The remaining 13 warships are at various stages of construction.

This underscores GRSE's robust shipbuilding pipeline and commitment to timely delivery. GRSE has also emerged as the lowest bidder for the Next Generation Corvettes that the Navy plans to acquire and expects to conclude the contract to build five of them soon.

GRSE has recently signed contracts to build two Coastal Research Vessels (CRVs) for the Geological Survey of India, equipped with scientific labs for oceanographic research.

It's also building an Ocean Research Vessel (ORV) for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research and an acoustic research ship for DRDO's Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory. These scientific and research vessel projects highlight expansion beyond defence shipbuilding.

GRSE is well-positioned for growth with an extensive order book, expanding global reach, modernisation plans, and improving financial performance.

Challenges remain including dependency on government defence contracts, execution risks on complex projects, and geopolitical uncertainties affecting military budgets.

How Shares of GRSE have Performed Recently

Over the last one month, the share price of GRSE has gained 8%. In the past one year, shares of the company have gained 55%.

The stock hit a 52-week high of Rs 3,535 on 23 June 2025. The stock also hit a 52-week low of Rs 1,180.1 on 4 March 2025.
