Global electricity demand is projected to increase by about 8,300 TWh by 2027, with emerging economies like India contributing significantly to this growth.
The nation's electricity demand is approximately 1,700 TWh, which is expected to grow by over 20% by 2027, driven by industrialisation and the aspirations of a growing middle class.
One company that stands to benefit is Transformers and Rectifiers (India).
Transformers and Rectifiers India is a leading manufacturer of Transformers in India. With three advanced transformer manufacturing facilities, the company has established itself as a trusted supplier of high-voltage power Transformers.
Today, the company's shares surged 7%, attracting investors' attention on Dalal Street.
Here's what's fueling the company's impressive market rally.
Shares of Transformer & Rectifiers India (TARIL) rose by 7% on Thursday, 1 October 2026, after the Union Cabinet approved the Rs 1,860 billion (bn) PM-DHARA scheme a day earlier.
The plan aims to extend and enhance India's power transmission network, with about Rs 1,360 bn allocated for intra-state transmission infrastructure and 50 GWh of battery storage intended to enable the transmission of up to 135 GW of renewable energy.
This is important for transformer manufacturers like TARIL because expanding the power grid requires more power transformers and other transmission equipment. As states upgrade existing electricity networks and build new transmission capacity, demand for transformers could increase.
The government's focus on expanding renewable energy and improving the transmission network has therefore put companies like TARIL in the spotlight. Investors are expecting that higher spending on power infrastructure could create more business opportunities for transformer manufacturers.
India also aims to have 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, which could increase demand for transmission infrastructure and related equipment.
This could be one of the main reasons for the share price to surge.
TARIL said its ongoing expansion project is expected to be completed by August 2026, which should help improve capacity utilisation.
The company is also moving ahead with its expansion at Changodar and its backward integration plans.
While the Changodar project is nearing completion, the backward integration facilities are expected to be commissioned by Q1FY28, although there could be a delay of up to one quarter.
Separately, backward integration worth Rs 9-10 bn is expected to lift margins by 200 to 300 basis points from Q1 FY28, and management is targeting US$ 1 bn of revenue by FY29.
Previously, the company had initiated several measures and plans a few more, which could push revenues even further.
A key strategic move was acquiring a controlling stake in a cold-rolled grain-oriented (CRGO) steel processing unit.
CRGO electrical steel accounts for nearly one-third of transformer raw materials, making its quality and consistency crucial for reliable transformer performance. This acquisition will significantly enhance the company's supply chain management, operational efficiency, and market position.
Despite today's 7% jump, the shares remained down 8% over the past month and 10% over the year.
The stock touched its 52-week high of Rs 501.25 on 6 October 2025 and its 52-week low of Rs 224.30 on 2 February 2026.
