Why investing in gold makes sense

Nov 18, 2013

Here is today's recommended reading list from Equitymaster...

Traits of long term investors
There are broadly two types of investors - those with a short term outlook and those with a long term outlook. Since one should consider buying shares as buying stake into the company, it would only make sense for the investor to understand the fundamentals of the industry and understand the business. This is one key trait of a long term investor. Read on to know more such traits highlighted by the author in this article... (The Times of India)

Why investing in gold makes sense
Till recently gold was an excellent investment option. The yellow metal's prices were touching new highs in the international markets. And given its safe haven status, it made sense to invest in gold in the volatile times that had gripped the global economy. But in recent times things seem to have changed. Global investors are shunning gold as they think that things are improving on a global scale. However, there are still those who think that gold still makes sense as an investment. This article highlights some of the reasons as to why buying gold is a good option. Though it has covered this from the point of view of family office businesses; nevertheless even retail investors could take cues from it. (Benzinga)

Is QE a 'Reverse Robin Hood' policy?
Janet Yellen, who will soon become the next Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, has stated her intention to continue with her predecessor's QE program. However, according to a Fed insider, QE has done nothing to revive the economy. Instead, as pointed out in this interesting article by US Congressman Ron Paul, QE was a program launched with the intention to steal from the poor and give to the rich. In short, QE has had a 'Reverse Robin Hood' effect on the US economy. (SafeHaven)

Who pays when large Indian corporations default?
With India's economic growth rate slowing down, and the foreign debts of the large companies being bloated due to the weak currency, it will only make it servicing such loans more difficult. The author of this article discusses why the nexus between India's large business houses and the governments will make it unlikely for the former to default; and that at the end of the day, it will be the voting tax payers who end up paying. (Bloomberg)

Ignoring a tried and tested method
The author of this article expresses his concern as to why investors tend to ignore the concept of buying assets worth less than their tangible value. Especially when this method has been more successful in the past, and also because it is very simple to do! He also discusses why investors should not blindly buy stocks of high quality companies, and more importantly overpay for them. (Oddball Stocks)
