India - an important cog in Ford's wheel
Newspaper reports reveal that Ford Motor Company plans to develop India as the export hub for design and engineering capabilities.
Ford enjoys a presence in the country through two models, Escort and Ikon, both in the mid-sized car segment.
Ford's plan to focus on India is attributed to the fact that the Indian market is among the larger markets in the Asia-Pacific region. Cheap labour and latent engineering talent and designing skills is another factor that may have influenced Ford's decision to set up its designing and engineering hub within the country. The company has targeted an annual export target of US$ 200 m from India.
India seems to be finding her place in the sun as far as its auto sector is concerned. In future, the Indian auto market will prove critical to global auto majors (Suzuki, Fiat, Honda) who plan to use local manufacturing facilities to supply to the export market. Now even Ford has identified India as an important cog in its wheel.
