Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty closed sharply lower on Monday, 8 December 2025, breaking their two-day winning run that was fuelled by optimism around the Reserve Bank of India's 25-basis-point repo rate cut.

The pullback comes as investors turn cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve's interest rate decision scheduled for Wednesday, 10 December.

The BSE Sensex plunged 803 points intraday to a low of 84,909, while the NSE Nifty50 slipped below the 26,000 mark, touching 25,902.95, down 283.5 points from the previous close of 26,186.45.

Amid the broader market decline, one stock drawing significant attention was Reliance Power. The shares dropped around 5% in today's trade.

Here's what triggered the fall...

ED Files Supplementary Complaint

Shares of Reliance Power Ltd slipped over 5% on Monday after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a supplementary prosecution complaint against the company and its subsidiaries.

The complaint names Reliance Power, Reliance NU BESS Ltd., Rosa Power Supply Company Ltd., and several individuals in connection with the SECI bank guarantee case.

The company responded by stating that it had already lodged a criminal complaint regarding the issue. Reliance NU BESS had approached the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police on 16 October 2024, accusing third parties of arranging a disputed bank guarantee. An FIR was later registered on 11 November 2024, against those external parties.

Reliance Power maintained that it and its subsidiaries acted in good faith and are, in fact, victims of fraud, forgery, cheating, and conspiracy by outside entities.

It also pointed out that the ED's allegations have not yet been tested in court and that no wrongdoing has been established against the company.

The firm said it will get a chance to present its case before the court and clarified that the filing of the complaint does not affect its day-to-day operations. It assured stakeholders that it will take every legally advised step to protect its interests.

Reliance Power also emphasised that business operations remain normal and that it continues to focus on growth and long-term value creation for its shareholders.

What's Next?

Reliance Power's subsidiary, Reliance NU Energies, is shifting from being a purely solar-focused platform to a more robust provider of round-the-clock renewable energy. The company is building this capability through a diversified mix of solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Over the past 12 months, the platform has secured a strong project pipeline that includes 4.0 GW of solar capacity, 6.5 GWh of BESS projects and 770 MW of hydropower in Bhutan, all backed by long-term 25-year power purchase agreements.

According to the company, this multi-source strategy allows it to deliver dispatchable green energy, compete effectively in peak and round-the-clock tenders, and enhance returns through digital optimisation and energy trading.
