Why RBL Bank Share Price is Rising

RBL Bank is a prominent player in the banking sector, known for its strong presence in the credit card market.

It is the fifth-largest credit card issuer in the country and has been a consistent innovator in financial products. The bank serves millions of customers across India, offering a range of innovative financial products tailored to meet diverse needs.

RBL Bank share price was declining after the announcement of its Q2 FY25 results. The fall was driven by rising credit costs in its co-branded credit card portfolio and slower loan growth.

Investors were also concerned about the bank's lower-than-expected profitability, which added to worries about its financial stability. This combination of rising costs, slower growth, and weaker-than-expected performance led to a significant dip in market sentiment.

Investor sentiment has, however, shifted. The share price has rallied 10.5% in the last month, signaling renewed market confidence.

Let's take a look at the factors responsible for this upward trajectory in RBL Bank share price.

#1 CRR Cut

The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) recent decision to cut the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 50 basis points to 4% is providing a significant boost to bank stocks, including RBL Bank.

This reduction has infused approximately Rs 1.2 trillion (tn) into the banking system, enhancing liquidity and allowing banks to deploy more funds into interest-earning assets such as loans and investments.

For RBL Bank, this means an opportunity to expand its credit portfolio, generate higher interest income, and improve profitability.

The CRR cut directly impacts the bank's net interest margins (NIMs), a key metric for profitability, by reducing the portion of deposits held as reserves with the RBI.

This frees up funds for lending, enabling RBL Bank to increase credit growth, particularly in high-margin segments like retail and credit cards, where it has a strong presence.

Investors are optimistic about the potential for increased earnings, leading to a rise in RBL Bank's share price.

The ability to lend more during a period of increased liquidity aligns well with the bank's strategic focus on growing its loan book and boosting profitability, driving renewed interest in the stock.

However, it's important to note that despite this liquidity injection, challenges persist due to tight liquidity conditions in the market. Factors such as tax outflows, increased currency circulation, and capital flow volatility may continue to exert pressure on the banking system's liquidity.

Therefore, while the CRR cut provides some relief, banks like RBL Bank must remain vigilant in managing these liquidity challenges to fully capitalise on the potential benefits.

#2 Proactive Transition and Diversification

RBL Bank announced the end of its credit card sourcing partnership with Bajaj Finance (BFL), a relationship that had been instrumental in establishing RBL as one of the top credit card issuers in India.

Despite initial concerns, the bank assured that the transition would not disrupt existing cardholders or affect profitability. All 3.4 million (m) co-branded credit cards will remain active, with renewals transitioning to RBL-branded cards.

This move is part of a broader strategy to diversify customer acquisition channels. RBL has established new co-branding partnerships with organizations like Mahindra Finance, IRCTC, and Indian Oil, tapping into varied customer bases and reducing dependency on a single partner.

These partnerships, coupled with plans to increase direct sourcing of credit cards to 50% in the coming quarters, reflect RBL's efforts to strengthen its position and mitigate risks.

What Next?

RBL Bank's future plans reveal its aim to prioritise retail advances and commercial banking while gradually reducing its reliance on wholesale banking.

One of its key initiatives is the expansion of its commercial card program, targeting over 100 clients and aiming to achieve monthly spending of Rs 7 billion (bn) by March 2025.

Additionally, the bank is working to strengthen asset quality through enhanced collection efficiencies in its microfinance and credit card portfolios. By reducing slippages and stabilising these critical segments, it expects to see improvements in performance by the third quarter.

The bank remains committed to growing its granular deposits, particularly retail deposits, to ensure a stronger funding base.

It also anticipates a decline in slippages in the coming quarters and is focused on optimizing operational efficiencies to lower costs. With sufficient capital for the medium term, RBL Bank does not foresee any immediate need for additional capital infusion.

By concentrating on secured and granular retail loans, the bank aims to enhance profitability and achieve its long-term objectives. Management believes that as disruptions from recent transitions stabilize, the bank's overall performance will improve, leading to better shareholder returns.

However, the bank's ability to effectively manage asset quality and sustain steady deposit growth will be vital to its continued success.

Investors should also consider corporate governance as one of the criteria for due diligence before considering an investment.
