India is the world's second-largest producer of crude steel, and the sector plays a crucial role in driving the country's economy.
Steel is a cyclical industry, influenced by global demand, raw material prices, economic growth, government policies, and infrastructure development.
Among all stocks in the sector, Tata Steel is currently in the spotlight surging 3.3% today.
As one of India's leading steel producers, it boasts a strong domestic and international presence, and a diverse product portfolio.
So, what's fueling Tata Steel's impressive price momentum?
Tata Steel shares rose on Friday following the company's announcement of an ambitious growth and expansion roadmap.
The focus is on boosting capacity, strengthening raw material security, expanding its presence across India, and adopting sustainable steelmaking technologies.
The board confirmed its long-term growth strategy, focusing on careful capital use and profitable growth. Key priorities are increasing volume, expanding the value-added downstream portfolio, investing in strategic mining assets and infrastructure, and introducing low-carbon, low-capital technologies for future steel production.
Major initiatives driving growth include the approval for a 4.8 MTPA capacity expansion at Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited, which will serve the high-margin retail and construction segments. There is also a 2.5 MTPA Thin Slab Caster and Rolling facility at Meramandali aimed at expanding thinner gauge steel production.
Additionally, a 0.7 MTPA Hot Rolled Pickling and Galvanizing Line at Tarapur will help meet automotive sector needs and reduce imports.
Tata Steel is partnering with Lloyd Metals & Energy in Maharashtra to explore iron ore mining, logistics, and new steel projects. It is also acquiring a 50.01% stake in Thriveni Pellets, which runs a 4 MTPA pellet plant in Odisha. This move helps secure raw materials.
The company is progressing with the HIsarna low-carbon technology. This technology reduces coke usage, uses lower-quality iron ore, and recycles steel slag. Tata Steel plans to establish a 1 MTPA demonstration plant in Jamshedpur.
These initiatives, which include capacity expansion, growth in downstream operations, sustainable technology, and raw material security, are boosting Tata Steel's strong performance and highlighting its growth potential.
This could be the main reason for the share price to rise.
Moving forward, Tata Steel aims to increase its crude steel production capacity in India from 21 million (m) tonnes per annum to 40 m tonnes per annum by 2030.
Tata Steel is investing heavily in green steel technologies to reduce its carbon footprint, including hydrogen steelmaking, electric arc furnace, and aiming for carbon neutrality by 2045 through energy-efficient processes and waste recycling.
With these efforts, Tata Steel aims to combine strong growth and sustainability. This will help shape the future of steel in India.
In the past six months, shares of Tata Steel have surged 12%.
The stock touched its 52-week high of Rs 187 on 29 October 2025 and a 52-week low of Rs 122.6 on 13 January 2025.
Tata Steel is one of the world's largest and most geographically diversified steel producers. It has major production facilities in Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) and Kalinganagar (Odisha).
The company operates fully integrated steelmaking facilities, from captive iron-ore mining to finished steel products, which helps maintain cost competitiveness and production efficiency.
Tata Steel also has significant operations in Europe, including the Netherlands and the UK, with a combined crude steel capacity of around 12 mtpa. Its European operations supply high-quality steel to sectors such as automotive, construction, packaging, and engineering.
The company's product portfolio spans automotive and special steels, industrial products, branded retail products, and services.
