The benchmark equity indices, Sensex and Nifty, pared early losses on Monday, supported by value buying in select sectors such as consumer durables, FMCG, and IT.

In early trade on 15 December, the Sensex fell 427.34 points to an intraday low of 84,840.32, while the Nifty slipped 142.2 points to 25,904.75. However, the Sensex ended the day with modest losses of 54 points, while the Nifty closed marginally lower by 19 points at 26,027 points.

Amid the broader market recovery, Vodafone Idea (Vi) shares saw sharp gains in intra-day trade.

The stock hit a 15-month high of Rs 12.02 on the BSE, rising 3% in intraday trade despite the weak broader market, supported by strong volumes.

The telecom operator's shares have now advanced for the third consecutive session, gaining 12% during this period.

Here's what is fuelling the rally.

# Moratorium Relief Likely Ahead

According to a report by The Economic Times, the government is considering granting Vodafone Idea (Vi) an interest-free moratorium of four to five years on over Rs 830 bn of pending statutory dues related to adjusted gross revenue (AGR), offering near-term relief to the cash-strapped telecom operator.

Post the moratorium period, Vi would be required to repay the dues in six instalments. However, the total payable amount could be significantly reduced-potentially by nearly half-following a reassessment of liabilities, the report said, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Last month, the Supreme Court also permitted the Centre to design a special relief package covering Vi's entire AGR liabilities. Resolution of this issue could enable the company to raise fresh capital, including its planned fundraise of Rs 250 bn.

During its Q2FY26 earnings conference call held on 11 November 2025, Vi's management confirmed that discussions with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) were ongoing to determine the next steps.

What Next?

Going forward, the company plans to invest in expanding its high-speed broadband network by adding new 4G sites and upgrading its core and transmission infrastructure to enhance coverage and capacity.

Its focus remains on delivering sustainable growth by strengthening the product portfolio across both prepaid and postpaid segments, while deepening its presence in the digital ecosystem. In the prepaid segment, the strategy continues to deliver positive outcomes, supported by flagship offerings such as the Non-Stop Hero Plan, which provides unlimited data access round the clock.

The Vi Business segment is driving growth through value-led innovation in the IoT space.

The smart metering business targets the deployment of 12 million (m) solutions over the next three years, positioning the company as a key enabler of India's smart energy transition.

Additionally, the launch of the IoT Innovation Lab in collaboration with AWS and C-DOT is expected to serve as a next-generation hub to co-create, rapidly test, and scale solutions across sectors such as automotive, manufacturing, and connected infrastructure.

To support the rising enterprise data traffic, the company is executing a focused network expansion strategy, including the development of a Dedicated Enterprise Corridor across key cities, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai.

This initiative will add over 2 tbps of new capacity and involve upgrades to data centre infrastructure.
