Small-cap stocks have come under intense selling pressure in recent weeks, retreating sharply after months of strong outperformance.
The BSE Smallcap index has declined over 5.3% in the past month, falling from 53,443 points on 17 November to around 50,608 in intraday trade on 17 December.
This correction has unfolded despite a reasonable pickup in earnings across sectors and generally healthy balance sheets.
Market participants attribute the weakness largely to retail investor fatigue, as returns over the past year have remained muted compared with the sharp gains seen in the earlier phase of the rally.
Amid the broader sell-off, Akzo Nobel India has also come under pressure. Shares of the paint maker tumbled as much as 15% on Wednesday after nearly 4.88 million (m) shares changed hands in early trade.
The stock hit an intraday low of Rs 3,080.2 per share, marking its steepest single-day decline since March 2020.
Here's why shares of Akzo Nobel India are falling.
The share price of Akzo Nobel India came under pressure following a large block deal, where around 5.2 m shares, about 11.4% of the company's equity changed hands at Rs 3,159 per share, valuing the transaction at nearly Rs 16.4 bn.
While the buyers and sellers were not officially disclosed, reports suggest promoter entity Imperial Chemical Industries was the seller.
The deal followed reports earlier this week that Imperial Chemical Industries was planning to offload up to a 9% stake via block deals. As of the September quarter, the promoter entity held a 45.5% stake, with total promoter holding at 69.8%.
The latest transaction adds to a series of promoter stake sales, including a 5% equity sale in September at higher levels.
The increased supply of shares and continued promoter dilution weighed on investor sentiment, leading to a decline in the stock price.
Going forward, Akzo Nobel India is expected to enter a new phase under JSW Paints' majority ownership.
With JSW Paints now holding over 61% stake, the focus is likely to shift towards integrating Akzo Nobel India's strong brand portfolio, including Dulux, with JSW Paints' distribution reach, manufacturing capabilities, and capital backing.
This combination positions the company to scale operations more aggressively in a paints market that is expected to witness sustained growth driven by housing, infrastructure, and rising premiumisation.
In the past 5 days, shares of Akzo Nobel India has dropped over 10%.
The stock touched its 52-week high of Rs 3,942.2 on 20 January 2025 and its 52-week low of Rs 3,045.9 on 3 March 2025.
