The Indian defence sector is experiencing a period of unparalleled period of growth.
Back in March 2024, defence ministry said that in 2014, India's domestic production was Rs 440 billion (bn), which crossed Rs 1 trillion (tn) in March 2024 and is growing continuously.
The government's initiatives focused on manufacturing military equipment domestically and modernising its armed forces has been the biggest driver of this growth.
This trend is reflected in the stock market, where some defence stocks have surged in recent years.
One such stock is Bharat Dynamics.
In this editorial, we will discuss the prospects of this public sector undertaking (PSU) defence stock.
Established in 1970 in Hyderabad, Bharat Dynamics (BDL) is an Indian PSU under the defence ministry. It's primary business is manufacturing missile systems and allied defence equipment for the Indian Armed Forces. It also provides life cycle support and refurbishment for vintage missiles.
Working in close collaboration with India's DRDO, Bharat Dynamics manufactures various missile systems like Prithvi, Agni, Akash, Astra, SAAW, Helina, QRSAM, MRSAM, VLSRSAM as well as various anti-tank missiles like the Amogha, Nag, Konkours, MPATGM, and Milan in India.
BDL also manufactures various torpedoes for the Indian Navy like TAL, Varunastra, etc as well as counter mine and counter torpedo systems.
It has three manufacturing units, located at Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad, Telangana; Bhanur, Medak district, Telangana and Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Two new units are planned at Ibrahimpatnam, Ranga Reddy district, Telangana and Amravati, Maharashtra.
At the end of FY24 the company had an order book of Rs 195 billion (bn) which is to be executed over the next 4-5 years which increased to Rs 200.7 bn in June 2024.
The company is actively looking at new orders worth Rs 200 bn over the next 2-3 years.
Recently, BDL has gained attention due to its role in producing the Nirbhay missiles, which all three branches of the armed forces will use.
The company has reported an increase in supply of Astra missiles to the Indian Air Force and more in order since January 2024. It has also increased in manufacturing of Akash air defence systems.
BDL's orderbook is driven by the company's focus on self-reliance and strong export potential.
In FY24, BDL's operating income during the year fell 4.8% on a year-on-year (YoY) basis.
The operating profit increased 31.2% YoY while the operating profit margin was 22.7% in FY24.
The net profit for the year grew 74% YoY while the net profit margin for the year was 25.9%.
The company is debt free with strong cash flows. The cash flow for operations in FY24 was Rs 4.1 bn.
The return on equity (RoE) and return on capital employed (RoCE) for the company in FY24 was 16.8% and 22.9%. respectively.

Bharat Dynamics is poised for significant growth in FY25 and beyond.
The company has projected revenue growth of 20-25% for FY25, with operating margins at approximately 20%.
The company is poised to enter new avenues of manufacturing covering a wide range of weapon systems across its three manufacturing units.
However, a key challenge for the company has been persistent supply chain issues after covid. The normalisation of the global supply chain is crucial for its operations and will enhance revenue growth.
The company is not waiting for the supply chain issues to resolve. It's actively working on indigenising its critical component ecosystem.
By reducing its dependence on foreign vendors, it aims to strengthen its operational resilience. This strategic shift is expected to safeguard the company against future supply disruptions, ensuring a more stable production pipeline.
The company's future strategy includes leveraging its solid order book, win more orders, and execute the same on time.
Also, the focus on exports will continue, particularly the Akash missile, light weight torpedoes, and the Konkours missile.
BDL is well-positioned to capitalise on international demand for advanced weaponry. The company had export orders totaling around Rs 24.2 bn at the end of FY24.
Bharat Dynamics is on a path of sustained growth, due to its manufacturing capabilities in strategic weapon system and its strong order book.
The only challenge for the company is the disruption in the global defence supply chain which it's trying to overcome with indigenisation.
While investors may be excited about the prospects about Indian defence stocks as well as Bharat Dynamics, it's important to understand both the positives and potential downsides. The sector has its own unique risks for investors.
Due diligence is very important before considering an investment in this space. Also, readers will have to incorporate corporate governance as one of the aspects of the due diligence process when analysing defence stocks.
Happy investing.
