Tata Engineering & Locomotive Company (TELCO) will be unveiling two concept cars, an all-wheel drive rough terrain vehicle, a tractor and an army vehicle at the fifth Auto Expo in New Delhi beginning on January 12, 1999. TELCO is India's largest medium/heavy commercial vehicles (M/HCV) (65% market share in September 1999) and light commercial vehicles (LCV) (63% market share) manufacturer. It also manufactures utility vehicles (28% market share) and passenger cars (7% market share).
According to a news report in a leading business daily, the tractor to be introduced by TELCO is with an ergonomic cab and a sleeper cabin.
TELCO's move to unveil a tractor must have come as a complete surprise to investors. They must be wondering what TELCO is upto ..first trucks, then cars, tomorrow tractors?!
As no further information was made available regarding TELCO's commercial plans for the tractor, it is difficult to comment on the venture. However, what one can say with a fair degree of certainty is that the company has got no background whatsoever in tractors. Moreover, with the car pulling down the company's profitability, the last thing the company needs is to make a break in tractor production.
