Global Stock Market Drivers

Stocks in Europe edged lower alongside US index futures after a mixed session in Asia as signs emerged that the global rally in equities is stalling.

Investors face a lack of fresh impetus to extend the 2019 rally in risk assets ahead of meetings between China and the US to discuss trade next week.

In Washington, there was little progress on the domestic front with the deadline approaching for Congress and the White House to reach a deal on keeping the government open.

Asian traders remain constrained by a lack of activity as many markets remained shut for Lunar New Year.

Among key events to watch out for is the Bank of England's policy outcome.

Oil Prices Slide

Oil prices fell on Thursday after US crude inventories rose and as production levels in the country held at record levels. But OPEC-led supply cuts and Washington's sanctions against Venezuela supported markets.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at US$53.84 per barrel, down 0.3%, from their last settlement.

International Brent crude oil futures were down by 26 cents at US$62.43 per barrel.

From the IPO Space...

Chalet Hotels debuted at Rs 291 on the BSE, up by Rs 11 or 3.9% from its issue price of Rs 280.

The offering, which was open for subscription between 29 January 2019 and 31 January 2019, was subscribed 1.02 times. The issue price was fixed at Rs 280 per share i.e. at upper end of price band of Rs 275-280 apiece.

Chalet Hotels is an owner, developer and asset manager of high-end hotels in key metro cities in India. Its hotel platform comprises five operating hotels, including a hotel with a co-located serviced residence, located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, representing 2,328 keys, as of 31 March 2018.

Meanwhile, the IPO of state-run Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) will be launched before September 2019, reports noted.

With IPOs hitting the markets again, we at Equitymaster believe a merit-based selection, primarily including valuation, business, and management quality, is the logical way to go about investing in IPOs.

If it means going against the herd, so be it. And going by recent past, this strategy has been proven to be successful more often.
