Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has announced a bonus issue for its shareholders. It approved the issuance of bonus equity shares in the proportion of 1:1, to the existing shareholders. The record date for eligibility will be declared later, and the proposal is still subject to shareholder approval.
Following this move, the company's total number of shares will increase, and its paid-up capital will rise from around Rs 653.25 billion (bn) to about Rs 126.50 bn However, this does not increase the company's overall value, it simply spreads the same value across a larger number of shares. LIC's strong reserves and profitability support this decision.
The objective behind the bonus issue is to reward investors and make the stock more accessible by lowering its per-share price. This can also improve liquidity, as more shares become available for trading.
