Worst Performing Sectors of 2018; S&P BSE REALTY Lags

The year so far has seen the BSE Sensex trade on a positive note.

On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, the index moved up from 33,812 to 35,717, registering a gain of 1,905 points (5.6%).

Let us have a look at the sectors that gained the most on a YTD basis along with the top gaining and top losing stocks in them.

The S&P BSE REALTY index stands as the worst performing index on year-to-date (YTD) basis. The index lost 33.2% since the start of this calendar year. During this period, PHOENIX MILL and were among the top gainers in the S&P BSE REALTY Index, while HOUSING DEV. INFRA and INDIABULLS REAL EST were among the top losers. Following S&P BSE REALTY Index is S&P BSE AUTO Index, which has lost around 22.9% on a YTD basis. EXIDE INDUSTRIES and M&M were the top gainer in the S&P BSE AUTO during this period, while TATA MOTORS and MOTHERSON SUMI were the top losers. S&P BSE METAL Index is also among the top 6 worst performing indices on a YTD basis. While S&P BSE METAL Index is down 22.1% on a YTD basis, S&P BSE POWER Index, S&P BSE OIL & GAS Index and S&P BSE CONSUMER DURABLES Index lost 20.1%, 17.6% and 10.8% respectively.

Best Performing Sectors on a YTD Basis

On the other hand, S&P BSE IT Index and S&P BSE FMCG Index were among the best performing sectors in the BSE Sensex on a YTD basis. While S&P BSE IT gained 27.7%, S&P BSE FMCG gained 8.5% during this period.

What About the Benchmark Indices?

Year to date, the BSE Sensex has moved up from 33,812 to 35,717, registering a gain of 1,905 points (up 5.6%).

The most traded stocks in the BSE Sensex during this period were SBI and GAIL.

The NSE Nifty has moved up from 10,442 to 10,722, registering a YTD gain of 279 points (up 2.7%).

The most traded stocks in the NSE Nifty during the above period were YES BANK and IOC.
