What is BSE Smallcap Index?

The BSE SmallCap is designed to represent the bottom 15% of the total market cap of all the companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

According to the market regulator, smallcap stocks are companies which rank 251st and beyond in terms of their market capitalisation. This index is designed to measure the performance of these stocks.

What is the price of BSE Smallcap index live today?

The S&P BSE SMALLCAP last traded at 47,112.8. It was up 0.5% over its previous close.

Within the BSE Small-Cap, the top gainers were KIRLOSKAR PNEUMATIC (up 14.7%) and HITACHI ENERGY (up 13.7%). On the other hand, AVANTEL (down 12.6%) and GLENMARK LIFE SCIENCES (down 9.0%) were among the top losers.

Can we buy the BSE Smallcap?

The BSE Smallcap is a collection of stocks and not a security that is traded on any stock exchange. Hence, we cannot buy it directly.

However, there are ways in which one can invest in the BSE Smallcap index.

One can invest in index funds or ETFs representing the index or buying future and options for it.

Which are the other important indices one should track?

Well, it depends on what your goals are.

Having said that, the two key indices to track are the BSE Sensex which contains the list of BSE 30 stocks and the NSE Nifty which contains the list of NSE 50 stocks.

However, these two indices are considered to be too narrow by some, since they only track 30 and 50 stocks, respectively.

For broader tracking, you could use the BSE 200, BSE 500 or even the NSE 500 index.

Some popular market cap based indices include BSE Smallcap index and BSE Midcap index, among others.
