The Nifty alpha 50 index is a collection of stocks and not a security that is traded on any stock exchange. Hence, we cannot buy the index directly.
However, there are ways in which one can invest in the Nifty alpha 50 index.
One can invest in index funds or ETFs representing the index or buy future and options for the same.
Which are the other important indices one should track?
Well, it depends on what your goals are.
Having said that, the two key indices to track are the BSE Sensex which contains the list of BSE 30 stocks and the NSE Nifty which contains the list of NSE 50 stocks. However, these two indices are considered to be too narrow by some, since they only track 30 and 50 stocks, respectively.
For broader tracking, you could use the BSE 200, BSE 500 or even the NSE 500 index.
Some popular market cap based indices include BSE Smallcap index and BSE Midcap index, among others.
