CTV sales lose colour in January
The sales tax rationalisation in some states coupled with the transport strike and Indian cricketing woes have made a dent in colour TV (CTV) sales volumes, which fell 20% in January 2000.
With the hike in sales tax, manufacturers have increased CTV prices on some models in various states. While Videocon has decided to absorb the increased costs, other manufacturers like BPL, Onida Philips and Aiwa have upped prices on certain models.
With the price hike, these manufacturers (BPL, Onida, Philips and Aiwa) are likely to see a decline in volumes (regardless of India's cricketing performance) while Videocon may witness some increased buying interest in its models. The price hike may also see some realignment in market shares. BPL with 22.3% market share (in November 1999) may see some of that share shaved off. Videocon with 11.7% market share is likely to witness firming up of market share in future.
