Maruti has posted 22% appreciation in sales (volumes) in February 2000, as compared to the corresponding period last year.
Maruti Udyog Ltd. (MUL) a joint venture between the Indian government and Suzuki Motors of Japan, has a presence in the small car segment (800, Zen, Wagon R), mid-sized segment (Esteem, 1000), premium segment (Baleno) and the utility vehicle segment (Gypsy).
According to reports appearing in a leading financial daily, Maruti sold 6,851 units of Zen, as compared to 6,203 units of Hyundai Santro, thereby reclaiming the numero uno position in the small car segment. Zen posted 40% surge in volumes (year-on-year), while Santro sales declined 16.2% from January 2000 levels. Maruti's 800 sales also perked up to 13,939 units. In all, Maruti sold 30,591 cars in February, up 22% over the corresponding month last year (25,177 units).
Zen has reclaimed the top spot from Santro, which is not really surprising. Santro's strong surge in January 2000 was considered by many as unsustainable. Now with the Wagon R (Japan's largest selling small car) in its arsenal, Maruti will look to consolidate its position in the small car segment even further. While its competitors only have one small car model, Maruti has three, beginning from the 800 at the lower end to the Wagon R at the upper end.
